Ismael Laguna, the legendary Panamanian boxer who helped elevate the sport in his home country, has died at 83. Known as “The Tiger of Colón,” Laguna died this week in a hospital in Panama.
The Panamanian Sports Institute announced his death, prompting tributes to one of the country’s most influential boxing figures. Laguna had reportedly been hospitalized before his death, although his cause of death remains unclear.
Ismael Laguna changed Panama boxing
Ismael Laguna played a major role in the rise of boxing in Panama during his celebrated career.
His breakthrough came on April 10, 1965, when he defeated Carlos Ortiz in a 15-round fight to win the lightweight championship. Although Laguna lost the rematch later that year, he eventually regained the title in 1970.
The championship victories helped turn Laguna into a national sports icon. His aggressive style and fearless approach inside the ring also earned him the nickname “The Tiger of Colón.”
Laguna was born in Colón, Panama, in 1943. Over the course of his professional career, he became one of the country’s most respected fighters.
Laguna leaves behind a remarkable record
Laguna finished his professional boxing career with 65 wins, nine losses and one draw. He recorded 37 victories by knockout, highlighting the power that made him such a formidable opponent.
His accomplishments eventually earned him a place among boxing’s all-time greats.
In 2001, Laguna was inducted into the International Boxing Hall of Fame. He is one of only five Panamanian fighters to receive that honor.
He was also inducted into the World Boxing Hall of Fame, further cementing his place in the sport’s history.
