The House of the Dragon season 4 release date may be further away than fans hoped.
The HBO fantasy series ended its third season on August 9, 2026. However, star Olivia Cooke has now revealed that production on the final season will not begin until next spring.
That update could push the final episodes into 2028.
House of the Dragon season 4 filming starts in 2027
Cooke recently spoke with ScreenRant about returning to the series. During the interview, she revealed that filming for season 4 will begin next spring.
The actress also discussed preparing to return to the world of House of the Dragon. However, she admitted that she has not started preparing for production yet.
The timing is important because filming does not appear to be starting immediately.
If production begins between March and May 2027, fans could face a lengthy wait before the final season arrives.
The season 4 release date could be in 2028
The previous production schedule offers some clues about the House of the Dragon season 4 release date.
Filming for season 3 began in late March 2025. However, the season did not premiere until June 21, 2026.
That created a gap of roughly 14 months between filming and release.
Therefore, a similar schedule for season 4 could push the premiere into 2028.
If filming begins in March 2027, the final season could potentially arrive around May 2028. A May production start could push the release even further into the summer.
As a result, fans may have to wait almost two years after the season 3 finale.
Season 4 will be the final chapter
There is, however, some good news for fans.
Season 4 will be the final season of House of the Dragon. The series is expected to complete its adaptation of George R.R. Martin’s Fire & Blood.
That means this could be the last major wait between seasons.
Still, the lengthy production schedule could test the patience of viewers who have already waited years for new episodes.
The final season is also expected to contain eight episodes, making the wait feel even longer for fans.
More Game of Thrones stories are coming
Fans will not be completely without Game of Thrones content during the wait.
HBO is also developing more stories set in the franchise’s universe.
A Knight of the Seven Kingdoms is expected to continue with a second season. HBO has also expressed interest in keeping the series running on a regular schedule.
Meanwhile, other projects remain in development.
Those projects include Aegon’s Conquest, Ten Thousand Ships, Nine Voyages and The Golden Empire.
However, the exact status and release plans for several of these projects remain unclear.
Fans may have to wait for House of the Dragon
The latest update makes the House of the Dragon season 4 release date look increasingly distant.
If production begins in spring 2027 and follows a schedule similar to season 3, a 2028 premiere appears possible.
HBO has not announced a specific season 4 premiere date yet. Therefore, fans will have to wait for an official confirmation.
For now, the final chapter of House of the Dragon appears to be several months away from filming and potentially years away from reaching HBO.
After three seasons of political battles, family conflicts and major losses, fans will have to wait a little longer to see how the story ends.
