Marvins Antoine, an 18-year-old freshman football player at UMass Dartmouth, died early Saturday after a stabbing in Providence, Rhode Island. His teammate, 19-year-old Kensley Macean, was also injured and taken to a hospital.
Providence police said officers responded around 12:30 a.m. to the parking lot of a Wendy’s restaurant on Charles Street. The incident followed a confrontation at nearby Mezzo Lounge, where Antoine and other UMass Dartmouth players had been earlier that night.
Antoine suffered stab wounds to the chest and was taken to Rhode Island Hospital, where he was pronounced dead. Macean suffered wounds to the head and neck. His injuries were described as non-life-threatening.
What happened in Providence
Police said the confrontation began at Mezzo Lounge before moving into the area around the Wendy’s parking lot. Investigators have not publicly detailed what led to the confrontation.
A suspect has been identified and is being held by the UMass Dartmouth Police Department, according to Providence police. Authorities had not publicly released the suspect’s name or charges in the latest reports. The investigation remains active.
The incident came only hours after UMass Dartmouth’s football team played Framingham State at home Friday night. The Corsairs lost that game 23-21.
Who Marvins Antoine was
Antoine was a first-year running back from Boston and a graduate of B.M.C. Durfee High School in Fall River, Massachusetts. He had recently started his college career at UMass Dartmouth.
The school listed Antoine as a freshman running back. He had not yet appeared in a game for the Corsairs this season.
Macean is also a first-year player. The school identifies him as a defensive back from Dighton, Massachusetts, and a graduate of Dighton-Rehoboth High School.
UMass Dartmouth offers support to students
UMass Dartmouth officials said there is no known ongoing threat to the university community. The school has made counseling and support resources available to students, faculty and staff following Antoine’s death.
The university community is now mourning Antoine while Macean remains hospitalized and investigators work to establish the circumstances surrounding the confrontation.
The case remains under investigation, and additional details are expected as Providence police release more information.
