Jennifer Hudson’s son, David, had one important thing on his mind before meeting Barack Obama: getting his handshake right.
The singer and talk show host recently shared a sweet story about taking her son and his cousin, Marian, to the opening of the Obama Presidential Center in Chicago. The family moment became even more memorable when the children realized they were about to meet the former president.
Jennifer Hudson’s son prepared to meet Obama
Hudson said David and Marian knew they would meet Obama, but they did not fully understand what that meant until they were waiting in line.
The children even practiced their formal handshakes before the meeting.
However, everything became real when David realized Obama was nearby.
According to Hudson, her son asked if the former president was actually right there. She confirmed that he was.
The moment was especially meaningful because Obama and Michelle Obama had not seen David since he was about 2 years old.
Hudson said she was finally able to bring her son back together with the Obamas after all those years.
Obama gave Hudson’s son a memorable greeting
The meeting quickly turned into a moment David and his cousin will likely remember for years.
Hudson recalled that Obama greeted the children warmly and even gave them a handshake that felt like a Chicago-style dap.
The interaction was captured on video and later shared with viewers of the Jennifer Hudson Show.
In the clip, Obama asked the young people what they were doing. Hudson explained that David is in school and plays basketball.
Michelle Obama also greeted the children with a hug.
Hudson described the former first lady as a sweetheart and laughed while recalling the gentle hug.
The Obama Presidential Center brought the family together
The meeting happened during a major homecoming for Hudson.
The Chicago native performed at the opening of the Obama Presidential Center, where she sang the national anthem and “The Impossible Dream.”
Hudson also reflected on the surreal experience of performing in front of four living former presidents.
At first, she said, she was focused on Obama and the performance itself. Only afterward did she fully process the historic setting.
She also recalled another unforgettable moment from the celebration involving music legend Stevie Wonder.

Hudson said she and the other performers did not know they would be performing with Wonder.
During the final performance, Wonder invited everyone onto the stage to sing with him.
The performers did not even know what song they would be singing.
Hudson called the unexpected moment an “ultimate flex” because Wonder was able to turn the situation into an unforgettable performance.
She also praised his ability to freestyle and said the experience was an honor to witness.
David’s Obama moment became a family memory
For Hudson, however, seeing her son reconnect with the Obamas was another highlight of the Chicago celebration.
She recalled Michelle Obama previously telling her to bring David to the White House.
Hudson joked that the request was not as simple as walking up to the White House and ringing the doorbell with her son.
Years later, the family finally had their reunion.
David’s carefully practiced handshake ultimately paid off.
For Hudson and her family, the meeting created a special memory during an already historic visit to Chicago.
