David Oyelowo is making history with his latest role as the legendary pirate Long John Silver in MGM+’s upcoming Treasure Island series.
MGM+ recently released the official trailer for the six episode fantasy action series. The show will premiere October 11 and offers a new take on Robert Louis Stevenson’s classic 1883 novel.
Oyelowo’s casting also marks the first time a Black actor has played Long John Silver on screen.
David Oyelowo leads Treasure Island
The new Treasure Island follows teenager Jim Hawkins as he leaves his sheltered life behind and enters a dangerous world of pirates, treasure and shifting alliances.
Tom Sweet plays Jim Hawkins, while Hayley Atwell stars as his mother, Bess Hawkins.
The story begins when Jim discovers a legendary treasure map. His mother quickly realizes the danger surrounding the map and tries to protect her son.
Their journey takes them aboard the Hispaniola. However, the voyage soon turns dangerous as they encounter Long John Silver and British agent Aaron Graham.
Long John Silver brings danger and mystery
Oyelowo’s Long John Silver stands at the center of the adventure.
The character combines charm with a dangerous edge. As Jim becomes more involved with the pirate world, Silver becomes an important figure in his transformation.
The series will explore Jim’s journey from a sheltered teenager to a hardened young pirate.
Meanwhile, shifting alliances will force Jim and Bess to make difficult choices as they fight to survive.
Treasure Island features an international cast
The series features a cast that includes several familiar faces.
Jack Huston plays Aaron Graham, while Tomer Capone portrays Billy Bones. Tristan Sturrock stars as Captain Smollett, and Craige Els plays Mr. Arrow.
Together, the cast brings Stevenson’s classic characters into a new fantasy adventure.
The story moves across the Atlantic and into a Caribbean region facing revolution. The journey eventually leads the characters toward the dangerous Skeleton Island.
When does Treasure Island premiere?
Treasure Island will premiere on MGM+ on October 11.
The six episode series will offer viewers a fresh interpretation of Stevenson’s beloved adventure story.
With Oyelowo taking on one of literature’s most recognizable pirates, the series also gives audiences a new perspective on Long John Silver.
