Johnny Depp is bringing Ebenezer Scrooge back to the big screen with a darker twist in Ebenezer, Paramount Pictures’ upcoming 2026 movie.
The studio has released Official Trailer 2 for the Christmas movie, giving fans another look at Depp as the legendary miser from Charles Dickens’ A Christmas Carol. The film is directed by Ti West, known for his work in horror, and takes a supernatural approach to the familiar holiday story.
Ebenezer is scheduled to hit theaters on November 13, 2026. Paramount describes the movie with the tagline, “The name you know, the story you don’t.”
Johnny Depp takes on Ebenezer Scrooge
In Ebenezer, Depp plays Scrooge, the wealthy but bitter businessman at the center of Dickens’ classic story.
The character has become one of the most recognizable figures in Christmas fiction. However, Ti West’s version leans into the supernatural elements of the original story.
The movie follows Scrooge as he faces a journey through his past, present and future. The experience forces him to confront the choices that shaped his life and consider whether he can change his fate.
That approach gives Ebenezer a more atmospheric edge than a traditional Christmas adaptation. The story remains rooted in Dickens’ work while embracing the ghostly elements that have always been part of Scrooge’s journey.
Ian McKellen and Rupert Grint join the cast
Depp leads a star-studded cast that brings several familiar characters from A Christmas Carol to life.
Ian McKellen plays Jacob Marley, Scrooge’s deceased business partner whose supernatural appearance sets the story in motion. Rupert Grint plays Bob Cratchit, Scrooge’s overworked employee.
Andrea Riseborough appears as the Ghost of Christmas Past, while Tramell Tillman plays the Ghost of Christmas Present.
Sam Claflin portrays Fred, Scrooge’s nephew. Daisy Ridley, Arthur Conti, Ellie Bamber, Charlie Murphy and Henry Lloyd-Hughes also appear in the film.
The cast adds a fresh ensemble to a story audiences have seen adapted many times. This time, however, the filmmaking team is putting more emphasis on the eerie side of Scrooge’s supernatural journey.
Ti West brings a darker edge to the classic
West’s involvement gives Ebenezer a distinct identity.
The director is known for horror films, and the new movie embraces the ghost story at the heart of Dickens’ original tale. Paramount has described the project as a ghost story set in Dickens’ London.
The story centers on a supernatural journey through Scrooge’s past, present and future. Along the way, he must face the consequences of his choices and fight for another chance at redemption.
Nathaniel Halpern wrote the screenplay, adapting Dickens’ 1843 classic for the new film. Emma Watts produces the movie.
Ebenezer arrives in theaters this November
Paramount has set November 13, 2026, as the U.S. theatrical release date for Ebenezer. The studio showcased the film at CinemaCon 2026, where Depp introduced footage from the new adaptation.
The release places the movie in the heart of the holiday season. It also gives audiences a new version of one of Christmas literature’s most familiar stories.
With Depp leading the cast and West behind the camera, Ebenezer offers a fresh take on Scrooge’s transformation. The new trailer suggests that this version will balance the familiar Christmas story with a distinctly supernatural atmosphere.
For fans of Dickens, Depp and darker holiday movies, Ebenezer is set to bring a very different Scrooge to theaters this November.
