Netflix has released a red-band trailer for The Mosquito Bowl, a World War II drama directed by Peter Berg. The film follows four college football stars who abandon their promising athletic careers to enlist in the U.S. Marines after the attack on Pearl Harbor.
The new trailer offers a glimpse of the brutal realities awaiting the young athletes. It features intense combat scenes, emotional reflections and moments that blur the line between the violence of war and the aggression of football.
One character describes experiencing a strange sensation he calls “white buzz.” The feeling begins in childhood and returns when he plays football. However, the trailer suggests that the same intensity takes on a darker meaning as he confronts the realities of combat.
Netflix has scheduled The Mosquito Bowl for a limited theatrical release on October 30. The film will arrive on the streaming platform on November 25.
Peter Berg brings a World War II story to Netflix
Berg directs The Mosquito Bowl following his work on Friday Night Lights and Lone Survivor. Both projects explore themes of athletic competition, military service and the pressures faced by people in extraordinary circumstances.
The new film combines those themes through the experiences of four college football players whose lives change after the United States enters World War II.
Following the attack on Pearl Harbor, the athletes enlist in the Marines. Their journey takes them from the promise of sporting success into the harsh realities of military life.
As they prepare for the invasion of Okinawa, the men participate in a legendary football game involving some of the greatest players of their era. For several participants, it would become one of their final games.
The story draws from The Mosquito Bowl: A Game of Life and Death in World War II, the nonfiction book by Pulitzer Prize-winning journalist Buzz Bissinger.
Nicholas Galitzine and Bill Skarsgård lead the cast
The film features Nicholas Galitzine, Bill Skarsgård, Ray Nicholson and Tom Francis as the four central football players.
Galitzine portrays John McLaughry, while Skarsgård plays Bob Bauman. Nicholson takes on the role of Tony Butkovich, and Francis portrays David Schreiner.
The story follows the athletes as they leave behind their familiar lives and confront the consequences of joining the military during a global conflict.
Their experiences also explore the bonds formed between servicemen under extreme pressure. Meanwhile, the film examines how the excitement and confidence associated with competitive sports collide with the unpredictable violence of war.
Berg also appears in the film as General Simon Buckner.
Red-band trailer highlights the cost of war
The red-band trailer emphasizes the film’s intense combat sequences and mature content. Its scenes move between the characters’ memories, their experiences on the football field and the violence surrounding them during wartime.
The recurring “white buzz” description offers a glimpse into one character’s experience of overwhelming intensity. As the trailer progresses, the feeling becomes connected to the psychological and physical demands of military combat.
The footage also reinforces the contrast between the athletes’ early ambitions and the dangers they face after enlisting.
Rather than presenting the story solely as a sports drama, the film places football within a larger account of sacrifice, brotherhood and the human cost of war.
When does ‘The Mosquito Bowl’ premiere?
The Mosquito Bowl will open in select U.S. theaters on October 30, 2026. Netflix will then release the film on its streaming platform on November 25.
The release brings Berg’s adaptation of Bissinger’s nonfiction book to audiences through a story rooted in the experiences of college football players who served in World War II.
With its combination of historical events, sports and military drama, the film examines what happens when young athletes are pulled away from their dreams and into a conflict that changes their lives forever.
