Ryan Gosling just became a bona fide box office force in a way that even his most devoted fans may not have seen coming. Project Hail Mary, the sci-fi adventure based on Andy Weir’s beloved novel and directed by Phil Lord and Christopher Miller, opened to a massive $80.58 million this weekend from 4,007 screens, delivering the biggest domestic debut of 2026 and Amazon MGM’s best opening weekend in the three years since the two studios combined. The global total stands at $140.9 million after just one weekend, with most of the world still ahead.
The film did not just open big. It opened in a way that suggests the box office run has barely started.
How the weekend played out
The numbers built steadily across the three days, with Project Hail Mary earning $33.1 million on Friday including $12 million from Thursday night previews, followed by $27.1 million on Saturday and $20.3 million on Sunday. The per screen average of $20,111 reflects a film playing to packed houses across the country, not just inflated by a small number of locations.
The audience response was overwhelming across every measurable metric. The film earned a 95 percent critical score and 96 percent audience score on Rotten Tomatoes alongside an A CinemaScore with 95 percent of respondents rating it in the top two boxes. Those numbers point toward exceptional word of mouth that should carry the film well into its second and third weekends. Audiences skewed 57 percent male and 43 percent female, with the largest demographic being viewers aged 25 to 34.
What this means for Ryan Gosling
Project Hail Mary represents a genuine turning point in Gosling’s career as a solo leading man. While his profile reached new heights with Barbie’s $162 million opening in 2023, that was an ensemble performance in a cultural phenomenon built on a pre-existing IP. This weekend’s $80.5 million is Gosling’s best debut as the clear, singular lead of an original film and it is not particularly close.
His previous solo headlining efforts, including Blade Runner 2049 and The Fall Guy, each earned under $50 million domestically over their entire theatrical runs. Project Hail Mary will surpass both of those lifetime totals within days, fundamentally rewriting the conventional wisdom about Gosling’s ability to open a movie on his own and expanding the kinds of projects Hollywood will now bring to him.
A remarkable achievement for original filmmaking
Beyond what it means for Gosling, Project Hail Mary’s debut carries significance for the broader state of original cinema. The film ranks as the second-highest opening ever for a non-IP, non-sequel original film of the decade, sitting just behind Christopher Nolan’s Oppenheimer, which opened to $82 million in 2023. It outperformed both Interstellar, which opened to $47.5 million, and The Martian, which debuted at $54.3 million — two of the most successful original sci-fi films of the past decade — by a wide margin.
Directors Phil Lord and Christopher Miller, known for the Jump Street franchise, The Lego Movie, and Spider-Man: Into the Spider-Verse, claim their biggest opening weekend ever with this result, a milestone that cements their status as two of the most versatile and consistently successful filmmakers working today.
The rest of the weekend and what comes next
The overall domestic box office posted its best 3-day weekend of 2026 with a total gross of $141.8 million, up 47.3 percent compared to the same weekend in 2025 when Snow White struggled at the same time of year. Disney’s Hoppers crossed the $100 million domestic barrier in its third weekend, earning $18 million to bring its total to $120.4 million domestically and $242.6 million globally. The Bollywood sequel Dhurandhar: The Revenge posted a record-breaking $9.57 million opening from just 987 screens, the biggest North American debut ever for a Bollywood film. Ready or Not 2 opened to $9.1 million, topping the original’s debut.
Next weekend brings a lighter slate of new arrivals, with Warner Bros. action horror comedy They Will Kill You starring Zazie Beetz as the only significant new entry. Project Hail Mary should have no trouble holding the top position for a second consecutive weekend.
