A California jury has found Bill Cosby liable for sexually assaulting a woman in 1972, awarding her more than $19 million in damages after a civil trial that revisited allegations dating back more than five decades.
The decision followed nearly two weeks of testimony in a Santa Monica courtroom, where jurors determined that Cosby was responsible for sexual battery against Donna Motsinger. The verdict marks another significant legal development for the former television star, whose legacy has been reshaped by numerous allegations of misconduct.
Cosby, now 88, has consistently denied accusations of sexual assault over the years.
Jury awards more than $19 million in damages
Jurors awarded Motsinger a total of $19.25 million in damages, including $17.5 million tied to past harm and an additional $1.75 million for future suffering.
The damages reflect the jury’s assessment of emotional and psychological impact, including distress and long-term effects on quality of life. The panel deliberated for just over a day before reaching its decision.
A separate phase of the trial is expected to address whether additional punitive damages may be awarded.
Case centers on 1972 allegations
The lawsuit stems from an incident Motsinger said occurred in 1972, when she was working as a server in Northern California. According to court filings, she alleged that Cosby invited her to attend one of his comedy performances and later provided her with wine and pills.
She reported losing consciousness and later waking up at home with signs indicating she had been assaulted. The case relied heavily on her account of the events, as well as supporting testimony presented during the trial.
Cosby did not testify in court during the proceedings.
Legal team signals plans to appeal
Following the verdict, Cosby’s legal team indicated they plan to challenge the outcome through an appeal. His attorneys argued during the case that the claims were based on limited evidence and questioned the reliability of the allegations.
The verdict comes years after Cosby’s 2018 criminal conviction related to another case involving Andrea Constand was overturned by the Pennsylvania Supreme Court. That decision led to his release from prison after he had served nearly three years.
History of allegations continues to shape legacy
Motsinger’s lawsuit is one of many accusations made against Cosby over the years. Dozens of women have come forward with similar claims, though Cosby has denied all allegations of wrongdoing.
In a separate civil case in 2022, another jury awarded damages to a woman who accused Cosby of assaulting her as a teenager in the 1970s.
Once widely known for his role as a beloved television father figure, Cosby’s public image has undergone a dramatic shift as legal cases and allegations have unfolded over time.
Ongoing legal and cultural impact
The latest verdict adds to the ongoing legal and cultural reckoning surrounding high-profile figures accused of sexual misconduct. Civil cases such as this one have allowed accusers to pursue legal action even when criminal cases are not filed or do not result in convictions.
As the legal process continues, including the possibility of an appeal and further proceedings on damages, the case remains a significant moment in the broader conversation about accountability and justice.
