A man convicted in the killing of a Detroit teenager has died while serving his sentence, bringing an unexpected development to a case that has drawn widespread attention.
According to the Michigan Department of Corrections, Jarvis Butts died at the Charles Egeler Reception and Guidance Center in Jackson. Officials confirmed his death occurred just weeks after he began serving his prison term. The cause of death has not been publicly disclosed.
Butts had recently been sentenced following his guilty plea in connection with the death of 13-year-old NaZiyah Harris, a case that also involved multiple additional charges tied to crimes against minors.
The sentence that followed the conviction
Earlier this month, Butts received a prison sentence of 35 to 60 years after pleading guilty to second-degree murder in the death of Harris. The sentencing marked a major step in a case that had unfolded over more than a year.
In addition to the murder charge, he was also sentenced in connection with multiple sexual assault cases involving children. Court records show he received five separate sentences ranging from 10 to 15 years for those offenses.
The convictions reflected a pattern of abuse that prosecutors said extended beyond the killing itself and involved several victims.
What investigators uncovered about the case
Authorities said Harris was last seen in January 2024 after getting off a bus in Detroit. Investigators later determined she had arranged to meet with Butts on the day she disappeared.
Prosecutors outlined evidence suggesting that Butts had known members of Harris’ family and had established contact with her prior to her disappearance. Investigators also pointed to digital evidence that helped build their case, including online searches conducted before her death.
Officials said Harris was pregnant at the time she was killed, and evidence presented during the case indicated that Butts was believed to be the father of the unborn child.
Her body has not been recovered. As part of his plea agreement, Butts was required to provide information regarding its location in an effort to offer some level of closure to the victim’s family.
Additional charges involving other victims
Following his arrest in the Harris case, authorities filed further charges against Butts involving multiple young victims. Prosecutors said those cases included girls ranging in age from early childhood to early teens.
Investigators determined that these incidents occurred before Harris’ disappearance. The charges added another layer to the case, expanding it beyond a single crime and highlighting concerns about prior behavior.
Records also show that Butts had a previous conviction related to a sex offense involving a child, which prosecutors referenced as part of the broader history presented in court.
Case leaves lasting impact as new questions emerge
The sudden death of Butts comes shortly after sentencing, leaving unresolved questions about the circumstances surrounding his passing. With the cause of death not yet released, attention has shifted toward what this development means for a case that had already brought significant attention and concern.
For Harris’ family, the case has remained centered on loss and the search for answers, particularly with her body still missing. The legal proceedings had offered a measure of resolution through the guilty plea and sentencing, but the latest update introduces a new layer of uncertainty.
As officials continue to review the circumstances of Butts’ death, the case remains a reminder of the broader issues it raised, including the safety of vulnerable individuals and the long path to justice for victims and their families.
