The Verity film trailer dropped on April 27, 2026. It wasted no time signaling that this film will not be a comfortable watch. Amazon MGM Studios released the official teaser for the gothic psychological thriller. The story comes from Colleen Hoover’s 2018 novel of the same name. Director Michael Showalter takes it somewhere darker than any of Hoover’s previous big-screen adaptations. Anne Hathaway, Dakota Johnson, and Josh Hartnett lead the cast. The film opens in theaters on Oct. 2, 2026.
For readers who spent years urging friends to pick up the novel, the teaser confirms one thing above all. Verity Crawford is one of the most compelling and deeply unsettling characters in modern fiction. Moreover, Hathaway appears to have fully committed to that menace.
The Verity film trailer is everything fans of the book feared in the best way
The teaser introduces audiences to 3 central elements. Together, they drive the film’s psychological tension from the very first scene.
First, the premise lands fast. Dakota Johnson plays Lowen Ashleigh, a struggling writer. Jeremy Crawford, played by Josh Hartnett, hires her to ghostwrite the final books in his wife’s series. His wife is Verity Crawford, played by Hathaway. A car accident left Verity unable to finish her work. So Lowen moves into the Crawford estate. Soon, she finds the family is far more fractured than it looks.
Second, a manuscript becomes the engine of dread. While living at the author’s home, Lowen finds what seems to be Verity’s chilling personal notes. She must then decide whether to expose the truth. The teaser makes clear that what Lowen reads shakes her deeply. As a result, she starts to question everything she thought she knew about the woman sleeping down the hall.
Third, the line between reality and manipulation blurs completely. Lowen shares a kiss with Jeremy on the couch. However, when she pulls back, she sees Verity looking at her instead. That single moment captures the tone of the whole trailer. Nothing is what it seems. Furthermore, the film refuses to offer easy answers.
Anne Hathaway leads a cast built for this material
Hathaway takes on her creepiest role yet as author Verity Crawford. This marks a sharp turn from the warmth she brought to The Idea of You, her 2024 Amazon MGM film. Notably, Showalter also directed that project. Yet the trailer makes clear she embraces the shift entirely. Her voiceover delivers a quiet, still warning that the story leads somewhere with no light at all. That stillness is far more chilling than any loud horror moment.
Johnson, meanwhile, serves as the audience’s anchor. Viewers follow Lowen and trust her — even as the world around her grows less reliable. By contrast, Hartnett’s Jeremy stays maddeningly in the middle. He is charming and protective, yet hard to read. That balance is exactly what the story needs.
Hoover first self-published the novel in 2018. It then became a literary sensation. In fact, it spent months on the New York Times best-sellers list and sold more than 1 million copies in 2023 alone. Additionally, it is the latest of her works to move from page to screen, following the success of It Ends With Us in 2024.
What to expect when the film hits theaters
Showalter’s Verity film takes a different path from most Hoover adaptations. Projects like It Ends With Us leaned into raw, heartbreaking emotion. Verity, however, trades that clarity for something far more disorienting. The script comes from Nick Antosca. His TV work on Candy and The Act shows a strong feel for moral ambiguity and slow-burn dread.
Amazon MGM has also been riding a box office high. Project Hail Mary has grossed $600 million worldwide so far. As a result, Verity arrives with real momentum behind it. With an Oct. 2 release date, the studio places it as a major fall title with awards potential.
Still, one big question lingers. Can the film capture the novel’s most debated quality the ambiguity of its ending? The Verity film trailer suggests Showalter and his cast are not afraid to try.
