If there was any doubt that the 2026 NBA playoffs were going to be memorable, Monday night erased it entirely. Two first-round series produced some of the most electrifying NBA playoff highlight plays of the postseason so far, with a Boston Celtics blowout and a Houston Rockets dismantling of the Los Angeles Lakers headlining a chaotic evening that reshuffled the momentum in both the Eastern and Western conferences. From an unlikely bench scorer catching fire to a hometown favorite turning over the ball at the worst possible moment, April 27 had everything.
Payton Pritchard erupts for 32 points as Celtics roll past 76ers 128–96
The biggest performance of the night came from the last person most casual fans expected. Boston Celtics guard Payton Pritchard, coming off the bench, torched the Philadelphia 76ers for 32 points on 12-of-21 shooting including 6-of-12 from three-point range in a dominant 128–96 win that gave the Celtics a commanding 3-1 series lead.
Pritchard’s hot hand from deep was relentless. He connected at a 50% clip from beyond the arc and finished with a 73.1% true shooting percentage, making the kind of clutch shots that only multiply in playoff intensity. The Celtics bench as a whole contributed 57 points, turning the game into a lopsided affair by the first quarter, when Boston shot out to a 34–18 lead that Philadelphia never recovered from.
Jayson Tatum added 30 points and 11 assists for his second double-double of the series, while Jaylen Brown chipped in 20 points. For Philadelphia, Joel Embiid led a valiant but ultimately futile effort with 26 points and 10 rebounds, while Tyrese Maxey scored 22. But the 76ers’ 30% three-point shooting and 9 total turnovers were simply no match for a Celtics squad playing their most complete basketball of the postseason.
Tari Eason’s 5-steal, 20-point performance shreds the Lakers in Game 4
If Pritchard was the unexpected hero in the East, Tari Eason played that same role in the West. The Houston Rockets forward was absolutely everywhere in a 115–96 win over the Los Angeles Lakers that evened their first-round series at 2-2, finishing with 20 points, 8 rebounds and an eye-catching 5 steals that directly fueled Houston’s 30 points off turnovers.
Eason’s play set the tone for a Rockets team that was suffocating on defense and relentless in transition — scoring 23 fast-break points at an 81.8% clip. Amen Thompson was nearly as impactful, pouring in 23 points on 62.5% shooting with 7 assists, while Reed Sheppard added 17 points on 57.1% three-point shooting. Alperen Sengun was a force in the paint, drawing 10 fouls and finishing with 19 points.
The Lakers, by contrast, were undone by a season-high 24 turnovers LeBron James alone committed 8, shooting just 2-of-9 from the field for 10 points in one of the more difficult nights of his postseason career. DeAndre Ayton posted a double-double with 19 points and 10 rebounds, but it was not nearly enough to overcome Houston’s defensive pressure and the chaos those turnovers created. The broader playoff picture after a wild Monday night
Beyond the 2 standout individual performances, Monday’s games made the broader playoff picture significantly murkier. The Celtics, who had struggled to pull away in Games 1 and 2, now look every bit like the team capable of repeating as Eastern Conference champions. Meanwhile, a Lakers squad that was widely expected to advance with relative ease now faces a pivotal Game 5 on the road.
Elsewhere in the playoffs, the Minnesota Timberwolves lead the Denver Nuggets 3-2 after a series of momentum swings, while the Orlando Magic shocked Detroit Pistons fans by winning Game 4 on the road to take a 3-1 series lead of their own. The San Antonio Spurs are also in firm control of their series against the Portland Trail Blazers at 3-1.
The night was a reminder that in the playoffs, the expected narrative rarely survives contact with the actual game. Whether it is a reserve guard torching a star-laden defense or an all-time great having an off night at the worst possible time, the postseason has a way of producing its own storylines. And with Game 5s looming across multiple series, the drama is far from over.
