“I think my role is that of a younger brother who learns from his older brother—a pest sometimes, but a playful, energetic kid who loves living and loves being around his family.”
—Marvin Lawrence Winans III
Over 50 years ago, author Judy Blume wrote Forever, a groundbreaking coming-of-age novel that became one of the most enduring young adult love stories of its time. This spring, acclaimed creator Mara Brock Akil brought Blume’s work to a new generation by reimagining the novel as a Netflix television series. In Akil’s words, Forever is “an epic and intimate love story set inside a love letter to the city [of Los Angeles].”
Adding youthful charm and warmth to the reimagined world is Marvin Lawrence Winans III—affectionately known as “Three”—in his breakout role as Jaden Edwards, a series regular whose presence enriches the dynamic of the Edwards family.
Winans is no stranger to the screen. He previously appeared in Quinta Brunson’s hit series Abbott Elementary as Chad in the memorable Season 2 Halloween episode—a fan-favorite moment that made him unforgettable to Generation Alpha viewers.
In addition to television, Winans has been featured in national commercials for top-tier brands such as Apple, Google, Amazon, AT&T, and Chrysler. With over a decade of experience in the entertainment industry, he represents the third generation of what is often celebrated as America’s First Family of Gospel. Now, he brings that legacy forward through acting, embodying both heart and humor with skill and authenticity.

In Forever, Winans stars alongside Michael Cooper Jr. (Justin) and Lovie Simone (Keisha) as part of a story that explores the magic, awkwardness, and intensity of young love. At the Netflix premiere, Akil expressed her gratitude to the cast:
“Thank you for embodying every layer of love, ache, and beauty these roles required. You showed us what it meant to be brave while being vulnerable.”
For Winans, that vulnerability is expressed through Jaden—a high-energy younger brother who oscillates between being charmingly pesky and deeply loving.

“I think my role is that of a younger brother who learns from his older brother—a pest sometimes, but a playful, energetic kid who loves living and loves being around his family,” he shared.
As part of Akil’s heartfelt tribute to Los Angeles, Winans adds levity and richness to the Edwards family dynamic, offering a portrait of brotherhood grounded in joy and unconditional love.
“This role has taught me that brotherhood is about always being there for each other, staying with each other through thick and thin—and that brothers are going to be mad at each other,” he explained. “The show is very emotional, but I was able to see how the family adapts and how they continue to love each other, even through frustrations.”
Before its official debut, Forever had already earned critical attention with two Gotham Award nominations: Best Breakout Drama Series and Best Drama Actress (Lovie Simone). Just days after its release, Netflix officially renewed the series for a second season. Fans quickly took to social media to celebrate Winans’ performance with emojis, praise, and excitement:
“Congratulations! My daughter and I LOVED the series and you were phenomenal in it!” one fan wrote. Another posted, “Best show of 2025…”
At the Season 1 premiere, Akil offered a final word of dedication to her audience:
“I wrote this for you and your generation. You deserve love, you deserve safety, and you deserve a future filled with endless possibilities.”

For Winans, portraying Jaden Edwards meant more than just performing—it meant helping his on-screen brother navigate love, offering support through tough moments, and seeing the world through a lens of hope and family connection.
Currently ranked No. 2 on Netflix, Forever has received glowing reviews, including a 95% rating on Rotten Tomatoes, 7.9/10 on IMDb, and a perfect 4/4 from RogerEbert.com.
