Apple TV+ is assembling serious star power for its latest psychological thriller. Elisabeth Moss and Kerry Washington, both Emmy Award winners with proven track records in captivating drama, are teaming up for Imperfect Women, an eight-episode limited series that promises to keep viewers on edge from start to finish.
The streaming service unveiled first-look images that offer a glimpse into the world created by showrunner Annie Weisman, who previously collaborated with Apple TV+ on the critically acclaimed dramedy Physical. The series premieres globally on Wednesday, March 18, with the first two episodes dropping simultaneously before settling into a weekly release schedule through April 29.
A friendship shattered by crime
Based on Araminta Hall’s novel of the same name, Imperfect Women explores what happens when a shocking crime tears apart the decades-long friendship between three women. The unconventional thriller digs deep into themes of guilt and retribution, love and betrayal, examining the compromises people make that alter their lives permanently.
As the investigation into the crime progresses, viewers will discover that even the closest friendships harbor secrets. The series peels back layers of what appeared to be an unshakeable bond, revealing that nothing about these relationships was quite what it seemed on the surface.
An ensemble worth watching
Beyond the powerhouse pairing of Moss and Washington, the series boasts an impressive ensemble cast that reads like a who’s who of acclaimed television talent. Kate Mara, known for her work in House of Cards and The Martian, joins the project alongside Joel Kinnaman from For All Mankind and Corey Stoll, another House of Cards veteran.
Broadway legend and Emmy winner Leslie Odom Jr. brings his considerable talents to the series, while Sheryl Lee Ralph from Abbott Elementary adds another Emmy-winning performer to the roster. The cast also includes Audrey Zahn, Jill Wagner, Rome Flynn, Violette Linnz, Indiana Elle, Jackson Kelly, Keith Carradine, Ana Ortiz and Wilson Bethel.
Behind the scenes talent
Weisman serves as both creator and showrunner, bringing her distinctive voice to Hall’s source material. The author herself participates as an executive producer alongside writer Kay Oyegun, ensuring the adaptation honors the spirit of the original novel while taking advantage of the visual medium.
Moss and Lindsey McManus initially optioned the book through their production company Love and Squalor Pictures, with both serving as executive producers on the series. Washington executive produces through Simpson Street alongside Pilar Savone, demonstrating her continued commitment to bringing complex stories about women to screens.
Lesli Linka Glatter, whose directorial credits include Homeland and Love and Death, helms and executive produces the first episode, setting the visual and tonal foundation for the series.
A co-production with pedigree
The limited series represents a co-production between 20th Television and Apple Studios, combining resources and expertise from two major players in the streaming landscape. This marks another high-profile project for Apple TV+, which has quickly established itself as a destination for prestige television since launching in November 2019.
The streaming service has accumulated an impressive 662 wins and 3,006 award nominations across its original programming, including multiple Emmy Awards for comedies like The Studio and Ted Lasso, and an Oscar for Best Picture winner CODA.
