Don Lemon faces backlash after Minneapolis church protest

Jan. 19, 2026 / News / Author: Praise Swint

Former CNN anchor Don Lemon has come under scrutiny after participating in an anti-ICE protest in the Minneapolis-Saint Paul area on Sunday. The demonstration, which took place at Cities Church, reportedly interrupted a service, and Lemon documented the event through live-streamed videos shared online. The protest was part of ongoing public outrage following the fatal shooting of Renee Nicole Good, an incident that has intensified anti-ICE sentiment in the region.

Confusion over pastor’s identity

The protest also centered on claims regarding Cities Church pastor David Easterwood. Social media posts suggested that Easterwood serves as the Field Office Director of the Immigration and Customs Enforcement (ICE) in St. Paul. While it is confirmed that an individual named David Easterwood holds the ICE position, it remains unclear whether this person is the same individual affiliated with Cities Church. Church leadership listings do include a David Easterwood among pastoral staff, but verification has not been independently confirmed. Authorities from Cities Church have been contacted for comment, and the matter remains unresolved.

Social media backlash

Lemon’s participation and live-streaming of the protest drew sharp criticism online. Commentators accused him of acting recklessly by entering a place of worship with claims that the pastor was affiliated with ICE. Some social media users expressed concern about the disruption to the congregation, while others criticized Lemon for allegedly using the incident to maintain public relevance.

Despite the criticism, Lemon’s video coverage described the protest as part of a broader movement highlighting ICE operations in Minnesota. The former anchor noted his presence in the city was meant to shed light on public grievances and ongoing demonstrations.

Ongoing anti-ICE demonstrations

The protest at Cities Church is one of several in the Minneapolis-Saint Paul area sparked by heightened tensions over federal immigration enforcement. Residents and activists have staged rallies, marches, and other public actions following controversial incidents involving ICE, including the fatal shooting of Renee Nicole Good. These demonstrations have drawn national attention, with figures like Lemon participating to document and amplify the events.

Authorities and church response

As of now, there have been no independent confirmations regarding the pastor’s alleged ICE affiliation, and no formal statements have been released by church authorities. Law enforcement has not reported arrests or violence related to the church demonstration, and the incident appears to have been largely contained.

The situation underscores the complexity of protests and public demonstrations, particularly when high-profile individuals are involved. Lemon’s participation has highlighted the intersection of media coverage, activism, and public scrutiny, with social media providing an immediate forum for both support and criticism.
