The Dance Theatre of Harlem is preparing for a major moment in its 2026 New York season as the company revives Firebird with Stravinsky’s iconic score performed live by the Gateways Festival Orchestra. The partnership brings together two respected cultural institutions for the first time, marking a meaningful step in the continued evolution of both organizations.
During the run scheduled for April 16 through April 19 at New York City Center, the Gateways Festival Orchestra will feature fifty eight Black classical musicians from top symphonies, academic institutions, and international ensembles. Their presence adds a new dimension to the performance, emphasizing the shared commitment of both institutions to honor legacy while expanding representation in classical and contemporary arts.

A season built on legacy and innovation
The collaboration arrives at a time when the Dance Theatre of Harlem continues to carry forward the vision of its late co founder Arthur Mitchell. As the company prepares to introduce Firebird to a new generation of audiences, it does so with a deeper sense of cultural resonance. The return of this signature work highlights the company’s ongoing dedication to bridging tradition with forward looking artistry.
The orchestra, led by conductor Jeri Lynne Johnson for three nights of the engagement, will bring renewed momentum to Stravinsky’s celebrated score. For the Vision Gala performance on April 17, Pulitzer Prize winning conductor and composer Tania León will take the podium, reinforcing the significance of the evening and its place within the company’s storied history.

Four days of dynamic performances
Across the four day season, audiences will experience a wide range of repertory that reflects the company’s expanding creative landscape. The programming includes works by William Forsythe, Robert Garland, and Jodie Gates, along with John Taras’ Firebird.
