Zerodha has expanded its investment offerings with the launch of a new index fund designed to track the Nifty MidSmallcap400 50:50 Index. The open-ended equity scheme aims to give investors exposure to a broader segment of the market by focusing on mid-cap and small-cap companies rather than the traditional large-cap heavyweights.
The fund tracks an index made up of 400 companies, including 150 mid-cap and 250 small-cap stocks, maintaining an equal weight allocation between the two categories. By excluding the top 100 large-cap stocks, the scheme positions itself as an alternative for investors seeking diversification beyond the biggest names in the market.
Focus on mid- and small-cap opportunities
The newly launched fund is structured to capture growth potential in emerging and expanding companies. Mid-cap and small-cap stocks are often associated with higher growth prospects compared to large-cap firms, although they also come with increased volatility.
By maintaining a consistent 50:50 allocation between mid- and small-cap stocks, the fund ensures balanced exposure across these segments. This structure helps investors avoid over-concentration in one category while still benefiting from the growth opportunities both segments can offer.
The index is also periodically rebalanced, which helps maintain the intended allocation without requiring investors to actively manage their portfolios.
Low entry barrier for investors
One of the standout features of the fund is its accessibility. Investors can start with as little as ₹100 during the initial offering period, with units priced at ₹10. This low entry point makes the fund accessible to a wide range of participants, including first-time investors looking to enter the equity market.
The open-ended nature of the scheme also allows investors to buy or sell units as needed, providing flexibility alongside its long-term growth focus.
High-risk profile demands caution
Despite its growth-oriented appeal, the fund carries a “very high” risk classification. This reflects the inherent volatility associated with mid-cap and small-cap stocks, which tend to experience larger price swings compared to more established companies.
Investors considering this fund are typically those with a higher risk tolerance and a long-term investment horizon. Market fluctuations can be significant in the short term, but the strategy is designed to potentially reward patience over time.
Strategy aimed at long-term growth
The fund is best suited for investors who are comfortable navigating market ups and downs in pursuit of higher returns. By focusing on a broad basket of mid- and small-cap stocks, it aims to tap into sectors and companies that may not yet be fully represented in large-cap indices.
This approach aligns with a long-term growth strategy, where staying invested over an extended period can help smooth out volatility and capture potential gains.
What it means for investors
The launch reflects a growing trend among investors seeking diversification beyond large-cap dominated portfolios. With more individuals looking to participate in broader market opportunities, funds like this provide a structured way to gain exposure without the need for active stock selection.
However, the high-risk nature of the fund means it may not be suitable for everyone. Investors are encouraged to assess their financial goals and risk tolerance before committing capital.
