Pedestrian killed after Valley Metro bus strikes her in west Phoenix crosswalk
The woman was walking in a marked crosswalk near 59th Avenue when the bus hit her
A woman died Thursday morning after a Valley Metro bus struck her in a marked crosswalk in west Phoenix. The crash happened at 4:46 a.m. on May 28 near 59th Avenue and Van Buren Street, close to a Loop 202 South Mountain freeway access road.
The bus was turning when it hit the woman
According to Phoenix Police Lt. Ann Justus, the bus was making a turn onto the freeway access road when it hit the woman. Officers who arrived at the scene found her pinned under the front of the bus. She was pronounced dead at the scene. The driver was the only person on board at the time of the crash.
Surveillance cameras on the bus were running when the collision occurred, and police say they will factor into the investigation. The driver showed no signs of impairment and stayed at the scene.
Police are treating the crash as a traffic accident
Investigators are currently handling the incident as a traffic accident. A reconstruction of the crash is underway, and detectives say they will determine whether charges are filed once that process wraps up. The victim’s name has not been released.
The community is mourning the loss
Lt. Justus described the crash as deeply painful for everyone connected to it, from the victim’s family and friends to the bus driver, who she said was visibly distraught after the collision. She also acknowledged the weight carried by first responders who responded to the scene.
The road near the crash site closed for several hours while detectives worked the scene. It has since reopened.
