The long-awaited Shrek 5 trailer has finally arrived. DreamWorks released the first official preview on Tuesday, giving fans their first visit to Shrek’s swamp in more than 15 years.
The trailer reunites audiences with Shrek, Fiona, and Donkey. It also introduces new members of the famous family and hints at another magical adventure.
Universal Pictures describes the upcoming film as a fun and exciting comedy that expands the beloved franchise.
Familiar voices return alongside new characters
Mike Myers returns as Shrek, while Cameron Diaz reprises her role as Fiona. Eddie Murphy also returns to voice Donkey.
The movie introduces comedians and actors Marcello Hernandez and Skyler Gisondo as Shrek and Fiona’s sons, Fergus and Farkle.
However, the trailer does not feature Felicia, the couple’s daughter. DreamWorks announced her casting in 2025, with Zendaya set to voice the character.
Trailer hints at another wild adventure
Although DreamWorks has revealed few plot details, the trailer suggests Shrek and his family will face unexpected trouble.
At one point, Shrek, Fiona, and Donkey appear to land in jail together. The preview also shows the return of familiar faces from Far Far Away, including the Gingerbread Man.
The film promises another mix of humor, fantasy, and family-friendly action.
Fans continue discussing the animation style
DreamWorks announced Shrek 5 in February 2025. The first teaser sparked debate online because of noticeable animation changes.
Many fans welcomed the return of the franchise but questioned the updated character designs. Others compared the situation to the redesign of Sonic the Hedgehog before that film’s release.
Despite the criticism, excitement for the movie has remained high across social media.
Release date and creative team
Shrek 5 is scheduled to premiere in the summer of 2027.
Walt Dohrn and Conrad Vernon direct the film. Both filmmakers previously worked on earlier Shrek projects. Dohrn also contributed to the Trolls franchise, while Vernon helped develop the Madagascar series.
The Shrek universe currently includes four main films and two Puss in Boots movies. The upcoming release will become the fifth entry in the main series.
A new chapter for the franchise
The latest trailer signals a fresh chapter for one of animation’s most successful franchises.
By bringing back beloved characters and introducing a new generation of family members, DreamWorks hopes to attract longtime fans and younger audiences alike.
More story details will likely emerge as the film moves closer to its 2027 theatrical release.
