Viola Davis is investing in the future of the community that helped shape her life. The EGOT winner and her husband, Julius Tennon, are donating $1.2 million through their Davis-Tennon Foundation to establish the Mary Alice Davis Family Engagement Center in Central Falls, Rhode Island.
The contribution marks one of the largest philanthropic gifts Davis has made to her hometown. More importantly, it reflects her deep connection to the city and the people who influenced her journey.
Although Central Falls is one of the smallest cities in the United States, it is also among the most densely populated. For years, the community has faced economic challenges that affected access to education, food security, and family support services. Davis grew up under those conditions and has often spoken about how poverty shaped her resilience and determination.
A center named after her mother
The new facility honors Davis’ mother, Mary Alice Davis.
Rather than choosing a symbolic name, Davis and Tennon decided to recognize the woman who helped raise their family through difficult circumstances. As a result, the center carries deep personal meaning.
Mary Alice Davis raised her children in Central Falls despite many hardships. Today, her daughter’s decision to honor her legacy reflects the gratitude and love Davis has consistently expressed for her family.
The Mary Alice Davis Family Engagement Center will support residents in several ways. It will provide educational services, family support programs, and financial literacy classes. In addition, community events will give residents a welcoming place to gather, connect, and access important resources.
Additionally, the center will become the permanent home of the Mary Alice Davis Food Pantry. Because of that permanent location, local families will enjoy more reliable access to food assistance instead of depending on temporary spaces.

What Davis said about the investment
During the announcement, Davis explained the inspiration behind the project. Instead of describing the investment as charity, she called it a commitment to opportunity and human dignity.
“For me, this has always been about possibility,” Davis said. “Every person deserves to be seen. Every family deserves opportunity. Every child deserves to grow up believing their future is larger than their circumstances.”
