The New England Patriots have acquired safety Jaylen Reed in a trade involving wide receiver Kayshon Boutte.
The Patriots also received a 2028 seventh-round pick as part of the deal, according to a report from NFL insider Tom Pelissero.
The move gives New England additional depth in its secondary as the team prepares for the upcoming season.
Jaylen Reed Heads to New England
Reed appeared in seven games as a rookie last season. He made one start, with most of his playing time coming on special teams.
Now, the safety will get a chance to compete for a larger role with the Patriots.
New England could use Reed as additional depth in its defensive backfield. His experience on special teams could also give him another path to earning playing time.
Kayshon Boutte Gets a Fresh Start
The trade sends Boutte to the Houston Texans.
Boutte will have an opportunity to compete for a role in Houston’s receiving corps following the loss of Jayden Higgins.
The move could give the young wide receiver a chance to establish himself in a new offense.
For the Texans, adding Boutte provides another option at wide receiver as the team adjusts its roster.
Patriots Add Depth With Reed
For New England, the deal appears focused on adding defensive depth while also gaining a future draft asset.
Reed’s limited rookie experience means he will still have plenty to prove. However, his ability to contribute on special teams could help him compete for a roster spot.
The 2028 seventh-round pick also gives the Patriots another future selection.
A New Opportunity for Both Players
The trade gives both Reed and Boutte an opportunity to reset their careers.
Reed will now compete for a role in the Patriots’ secondary. Boutte, meanwhile, will look to make an impact with the Texans.
With the regular season approaching, both players will have a chance to turn the trade into a fresh start.
