Actor Samuel Monroe Jr. has died at 52 following months of hospitalization. His mother, Joyce Patton, confirmed his death in a Facebook post on Aug. 27.
Patton thanked family members, friends and supporters who had prayed for her son throughout his health battle. She also asked them to continue praying for the family, especially Monroe’s three children.
The actor had spent months in the hospital after developing complications from meningitis. His condition later included MRSA pneumonia, and he was placed on life support.

In her Facebook message, Patton thanked those who had supported her son and confirmed that he had died. She also made a special request for continued prayers for the family.
News of his death comes just days after a legal dispute involving his mother and his wife, Shawna Stewart, became public.
According to Complex, Patton had recently asked a judge to place her son under a conservatorship that she would control. In court documents, she questioned the circumstances of Monroe’s marriage to Stewart.
Patton claimed that Monroe had been living with her before his hospitalization. She also raised concerns about Stewart’s involvement in his care and finances.
Stewart rejected those allegations and argued that Patton wanted control of Monroe’s finances.

Monroe had reportedly been hospitalized since at least April after developing meningitis.
His illness became more serious when he developed MRSA pneumonia. Doctors eventually placed him on life support as his family navigated his prolonged medical crisis.
Stewart had previously created a GoFundMe campaign to help with Monroe’s medical expenses. The fundraiser came as his family dealt with the costs associated with his extended hospitalization.
The health crisis also brought a difficult family dispute into the public eye.

Monroe began his acting career in 1993 with a role in Menace II Society. The film became an influential title in 1990s Black cinema and helped introduce audiences to his work.
He went on to appear in several recognizable movies throughout the decade.
His credits included Tales from the Hood, the horror anthology that became a cult favorite, as well as Don’t Be a Menace to South Central While Drinking Your Juice in the Hood.
Monroe also appeared in Set It Off, starring Jada Pinkett Smith, Queen Latifah, Vivica A. Fox and Kimberly Elise. His film credits later included The Players Club, directed by Ice Cube.
Through those roles, Monroe became a familiar face to audiences who grew up watching some of the most memorable Black films of the 1990s.

Although Monroe faced serious health challenges in his final months, his performances remain part of the movies that helped define an era of Black entertainment.
