Nicki Minaj has brought fresh attention to New York’s gubernatorial election after directing a series of political posts at Gov. Kathy Hochul. The rapper criticized the Democratic governor on Oct. 28 and encouraged voters to support Republican challenger Bruce Blakeman.
The posts appeared on X just days before the Nov. 3 election. Minaj questioned Hochul’s leadership and argued that Democrats should reconsider backing her for another term. She also challenged Black voters and Christians who support the governor.
Her comments quickly drew attention because of her growing public support for President Donald Trump and Republican candidates. However, Hochul did not leave the rapper’s remarks unanswered.
Minaj questions Hochul’s record
Minaj’s criticism went beyond the governor’s campaign. She shared a video of Hochul discussing Black children in the Bronx and access to computers. The governor had apologized for the earlier remarks in 2024.
The rapper used the clip to question Hochul’s relationship with Black communities. She also challenged Christian voters who planned to support the Democrat.
Another video featured Hochul discussing an inflation rebate program during a 2025 appearance at a Black church. The governor had joked about how recipients might spend the money. The church’s bishop later defended the wider message behind her remarks.
Minaj interpreted the clips as reasons for voters to reconsider their support. She also publicly urged her followers to back Blakeman.
Hochul responds to the rapper
Hochul addressed Minaj’s comments during a campaign appearance in Albany on Oct. 28. Rather than engage with each accusation, she questioned the rapper’s frequent attendance at Trump’s political events.
The governor suggested those appearances were influencing Minaj’s views. Her response added another public exchange to an already active campaign season.
Meanwhile, Blakeman welcomed the attention from Minaj. The Republican candidate also responded to her online support, drawing the rapper further into the governor’s campaign conversation.
Charlamagne questions Minaj’s political stance
The discussion also reached The Breakfast Club. During its Oct. 29 broadcast, radio host Charlamagne tha God questioned whether Minaj applied the same moral standards to Trump that she used when criticizing Hochul.
He argued that public figures should apply consistent standards to political leaders, regardless of party. His comments added another perspective to the growing discussion around Minaj’s political involvement.
Why Minaj’s involvement matters
Minaj’s political shift has become increasingly visible. The Queens-raised rapper has appeared alongside Trump and encouraged her followers to support Republican candidates.
She also attended a Trump rally in Michigan on Oct. 25. Her appearance gave her another opportunity to express support for the president and his political allies.
For Hochul, the attention presents another challenge during the final days of her campaign. Blakeman, meanwhile, gains exposure to Minaj’s large audience.
Whether celebrity endorsements influence voters remains an open question. However, the exchange has brought entertainment audiences into a closely watched New York political contest.
