A shooting at Haywood Mall in Greenville sent shoppers running on Saturday afternoon, June 13, and left multiple people hurt. The Greenville Police Department said officers rushed to the mall after a report of gunfire. Once inside, they found two people with gunshot wounds. Investigators have detained several people, and no shots have been fired since officers arrived.

Police are now working alongside the Greenville County Sheriff’s Office to clear the building. The mall sits at 700 Haywood Road, just off Interstate 385. Details remain limited, and authorities have asked for patience as the scene develops.

What police have confirmed at Haywood

So far the verified picture is narrow. Two gunshot victims were located inside the mall, according to police. Several people are now in custody. Officers believe the threat on scene has ended, since no further shots have rung out since their arrival. Beyond that, authorities have released few details about the victims or what set off the gunfire.

Crews are still moving through the complex store by store. That process takes time at Haywood, which ranks as the largest mall in South Carolina with more than 1.2 million square feet of space.

A scene of heavy police presence

Videos shared online showed a wall of law enforcement around the shopping center. Police, deputies and fire crews converged on the property within minutes. Shoppers described a chaotic rush toward the exits as word of the gunfire spread.

Some posts online used the phrase active shooter, and that language traveled fast through social media. Still, police have not confirmed an active shooter situation. Early crowd reports during fast-moving events often outpace what investigators can verify, so the official account may shift in the hours ahead.

A mall with a recent history of violence

The gunfire did not come out of nowhere. Over the past year, Haywood Mall has dealt with a series of fights and shootings, many of them tied to groups of teenagers. In one 2025 incident, a fight that started near the food court moved into the parking lot, where someone fired a gun. Greenville police later charged an 18-year-old in that case.

Local leaders have pushed for stronger security at the mall after those repeated flare-ups. Saturday’s shooting will likely sharpen that conversation again. For now, investigators stay focused on the immediate scene and on identifying everyone involved.

Greenville police say they will share more as the investigation moves forward. Anyone with information has been asked to contact the department. This remains a developing story, and the confirmed details may change as officials piece together what happened inside one of the state’s busiest shopping destinations.
