Chicago Juneteenth drive-by shooting leaves 13 people hurt
The Chicago Juneteenth drive-by shooting unfolded around 11 p.m. local time on Friday, June 19. Police responded to a shooting near West 95th Street and South Princeton Avenue in the Princeton Park neighborhood. Moreover, a red SUV pulled up to a large group gathered for the Juneteenth celebration. Furthermore, two people inside the vehicle began shooting before fleeing the scene, according to the Chicago Police Department. Consequently, the gathering turned into a chaotic scene within seconds.
At least 13 people were shot in total, ranging in age from 17 to 47. Moreover, the majority of victims received treatment at four local hospitals and are listed in good condition. Additionally, one 26-year-old woman suffered critical injuries and was transported to the University of Chicago Hospital. Consequently, her condition remains the most serious among all those wounded in the incident.
What witnesses described during the shooting
Surveillance footage from the scene captured the sound of rapid gunfire echoing through the street. Moreover, people could be seen running for cover as the shots continued. Furthermore, shattered glass from car windows and a nearby bus stop scattered across the ground in the aftermath. Consequently, the physical scene left behind reflected the suddenness and intensity of the attack.
Violence prevention advocate Irion Meadows witnessed the shooting firsthand. He described hearing rapid gunfire and said the incident does a disservice to the community and what Juneteenth is supposed to represent. Moreover, neighbor Michael Blount heard the shooting from inside his home. He described hearing rapid gunfire before sirens arrived moments later. Additionally, both accounts capture how abruptly the celebration shifted from festive to frightening. Consequently, residents in the area are processing both the physical danger and the symbolic weight of violence occurring during a Juneteenth gathering.
The victims and their injuries
Among those hurt, a 32-year-old woman was shot in the back. Moreover, a 44-year-old man suffered graze wounds during the shooting. Furthermore, one 26-year-old man refused medical treatment at the scene despite being among those struck. Consequently, the range of injuries reflects the chaotic and indiscriminate nature of gunfire directed into a crowd.
The 26-year-old woman in critical condition represents the most serious outcome from Friday’s shooting. Moreover, her transport to the University of Chicago Hospital indicates the severity of her injuries required specialized trauma care. Additionally, the wide age range among victims, spanning from 17 to 47 years old, shows that the shooting affected people across multiple generations who had gathered together for the celebration. Consequently, the community impact extends across families and age groups rather than concentrating on any single demographic.
Police response and the investigation so far
No arrests have been made in connection with the Chicago Juneteenth drive-by shooting as of Sunday, June 21. Moreover, a motive for the attack remains unclear. Furthermore, the Chicago Police Department has not released information about the suspects beyond confirming that two people inside the red SUV opened fire before fleeing. Consequently, the investigation remains in its early stages as detectives work to identify those responsible.
Chicago Mayor Brandon Johnson addressed the shooting in a statement. He said his administration is working overtime to hold people accountable and remove illegal guns from the streets of Chicago. Moreover, that statement reflects the broader gun violence challenges Chicago has continued to confront across multiple neighborhoods. Additionally, PEOPLE reached out to the Chicago Police Department for comment on Sunday but did not receive an immediate response. Consequently, additional details about the investigation and any potential suspects may emerge as the department continues its work.
