Prince Harry, Meghan Markle and their two children met King Charles III and Queen Camilla at Highgrove House today. The private gathering at the King’s country estate in Gloucestershire marked the first time Charles had seen his grandchildren in four years. Archie, now 7, and Lilibet, now 5, last met their grandfather during Queen Elizabeth II’s Platinum Jubilee celebrations in 2022. Buckingham Palace confirmed the meeting. No photographs will be released.
The reunion came during a week that brought both tension and progress for the Sussex family. Harry arrived in the United Kingdom alone on Monday for a series of charity commitments tied to next year’s Invictus Games. Speculation about whether Meghan and the children would join him grew throughout the week, with reports shifting daily.
The week of tension that led to the Harry and Charles reunion
Security concerns initially caused plans for the family to travel together to fall through. Harry and Meghan lost their publicly funded security protection when they stepped down as senior royals in 2020. That absence of official protection has been an ongoing point of difficulty for the couple when planning UK visits.
Further friction emerged over Harry’s accommodation. His spokesperson confirmed that Buckingham Palace initially offered Harry a place to stay, then withdrew that offer. Palace sources offered a different explanation, saying Harry did not accept in time and the deadline passed before royal staff could prepare. The dispute added an uncomfortable public element to what the family clearly hoped would be a quiet week.
By Thursday, reports confirmed that Meghan and the children would travel to join Harry, though the family would not make any public appearances together.
What the Harry visit means for the royal family rift
Harry has spoken openly about wanting to repair his relationship with the royal family. His father Charles, 77, is currently receiving treatment for cancer, and Harry has said he does not know how much time remains. That urgency appears to have driven the push to make this particular visit happen while the family was in the same country at the same time.
The relationship between Harry and the monarchy has been strained since the couple left royal duties and moved to California in 2020. Harry’s memoir, Spare, deepened those tensions with sharp accounts of family dynamics and allegations about the relationship between the royal household and the British press. His comments about Camilla drew particular attention.
Harry also lost his final legal case against the publisher of the Daily Mail this week, with a judge ruling he did not prove his privacy claims. Those legal battles have been another source of friction with his family.
Despite all of it, today’s meeting at Highgrove happened. For Archie and Lilibet, it may be the first time they have spent time with their grandfather at an age old enough to form a real memory of it.
