Jessica Nabongo is the 1st Black Woman to Visit Every Country, Continent and U.S. State. Yes! “EVERY!”

Jan. 08, 2025 / Passports & Paradise+ Travel / Author: Porsha Monique

Jessica Nabongo is a name synonymous with wanderlust, achievement, and inspiration. As the first Black woman to visit every country in the world, Nabongo has shattered barriers, inspiring millions with her daring spirit and unyielding curiosity. Adding to her impressive accomplishments, she’s also visited every continent and all 50 U.S. states. Yes, all of them.

In an exclusive interview with Revelence , Nabongo reflected on her remarkable journey. Born to Ugandan parents who settled in Detroit in 1969, she credits her upbringing for fostering her adventurous spirit. “Everything I have and am is because of them,” she shared. Traveling internationally since the age of four, she recounted a childhood filled with diverse experiences and the freedom to explore new paths. “I quit many things without attachment,” Nabongo said. “When something doesn’t fit, you have to quit and move on.” This philosophy propelled her from corporate roles and UN consulting to embracing a life of exploration.

Partnering with Cadillac: A Milestone Journey

Nabongo’s recent partnership with Cadillac exemplifies her trailblazing spirit. In 2020, she began collaborating with the brand, culminating in an extraordinary journey to complete her visits to all 50 U.S. states. Driving a Cadillac XT4, she crossed off her final five states just before turning 40.

Her milestone birthday was celebrated in Paris, where she attended the global reveal of Cadillac’s latest electric vehicle, the Optiq, and the opening of Cadillac City. “It was incredible—Detroit to Paris, celebrating a Detroit brand now global,” Nabongo said. Reflecting on the experience, she highlighted her ability to connect with people, from executives to staff, saying, “I treat everyone the same, whether they’re serving champagne or a global VP.”

Empowering Solo (Women) Travelers

In addition to her journeys, Nabongo is an advocate for solo travel, particularly for Black women who may face unique challenges. Speaking with Cadillac’s Juanita Slappy, Nabongo encouraged women to move beyond fear. “Ask yourself what you’re afraid of,” she advised. “Most people in the world are good. Interrogate your fear and move past it.” With solo trips to over 90 countries, Nabongo is living proof that courage opens doors to unforgettable experiences.

A Literary Legacy

Nabongo’s book, The Catch Me If You Can, published by National Geographic, is another feather in her cap. The book features 100 stories and over 100 images from her travels. Used as a sixth-grade textbook in Detroit Public Schools, it is now inspiring 4,000 students. “It’s been a beautiful journey,” she shared.

Inspiring the Next Generation

Through her travels and storytelling, Nabongo hopes to inspire joy, curiosity, and a hunger for discovery. “I want people to explore the world and learn about places they’ve never heard of,” she said. Her legacy is not only about breaking records but also about creating a blueprint for others to follow.
