DDG’s AP Swatch collab reaction became one of the more talked-about moments online this weekend. During a May 9 livestream, the rapper and streamer went on a heated rant. The trigger was news that Audemars Piguet and Swatch plan to release a collaboration watch. Prices will range between $300 and $500. That figure stung for DDG. He previously spent $200,000 on an AP watch. On top of that, he paid an extra $20,000 above retail just to get his hands on it.
His frustration came through clearly in the clip. DDG said the collab made him want to sell his AP entirely. He argued that dropping that kind of money now felt pointless. In his view, the average person could simply achieve a similar look for a fraction of the price. He also pointed out that most people would not be able to tell the two watches apart anyway.
The rant hit around the 29-minute mark of the livestream. From there, it spread rapidly across social media. Reactions ranged from amusement to sharp criticism.
Why the collab upset him so much
At its core, DDG’s complaint was about exclusivity. For him, the value of a luxury watch depends heavily on how few people can afford it. The AP x Swatch collaboration challenges that logic directly. Swatch officially confirmed the partnership the day before his rant went live.
Swatch described the collab as a fusion of accessible, colorful design with the craft of high-end watchmaking. Furthermore, the company’s teaser campaign built around the phrase “Royal Pop.” Most observers believe that references AP’s iconic Royal Oak line. The collaboration drops officially on May 16.
DDG said he would base his decision on how the launch performs. Specifically, he said the more popular the collab becomes, the less he wants any association with it. He also predicted the partnership would generate enormous revenue for both brands.
The internet pushes back
The online response was not kind to DDG. Many viewers found his frustration hard to relate to. Moreover, people quickly identified what they saw as the deeper problem behind his thinking. Hip-hop personality Dat Boi Vic posted a response on X that drew tens of thousands of engagements. He argued that only valuing something because others cannot afford it reflects exclusion rather than genuine appreciation. His post resonated widely. As a result, it added a sharper cultural dimension to what had started as a complaint about watch prices.
Not everyone, however, shared DDG’s concern. Rapper ASAP Nast came down firmly on the opposite side. He posted on his Instagram Stories that he urgently wanted the AP x Swatch collab and needed help getting one. His enthusiasm showed just how differently the release landed depending on the audience.
What the collab actually offers
For most consumers, the AP x Swatch partnership represents something genuinely exciting. Audemars Piguet watches typically cost tens of thousands of dollars. That puts them well out of reach for the vast majority of watch enthusiasts. As a result, this collaboration brings respected luxury design into an accessible price range. Buyers no longer need to pay inflated resale prices or stretch their budgets to breaking point.
Swatch has pulled off something similar before. Its 2022 collaboration with Omega produced the MoonSwatch. That release generated massive lines outside stores worldwide. It also became one of the most discussed watch drops in recent memory. Consequently, the AP x Swatch collab looks positioned to follow a very similar path when it hits shelves May 16.
For DDG, though, that kind of popularity may be precisely the problem.
