5 tense moments as a great white Shark nears a Florida boat

A routine day on the water quickly became unforgettable for a Florida charter captain and his wife when a great white shark surfaced near their boat in the Gulf of Mexico.

Captain Brad Clark and his wife, Yvette Clark, were fishing with friends about 27 miles west of the Venice Jetty when the rare encounter unfolded. The couple, who operate Aquaholic Charters, had been enjoying calm waters and steady fishing while watching a pod of dolphins swim alongside the boat.

What began as a peaceful outing soon turned into a moment that left everyone on board stunned.

1. A dolphin sighting turns unexpected

The Clarks were filming dolphins that had gathered near the boat, a common and welcome sight during fishing trips in the area. Dolphins often trail vessels in the Gulf, sometimes signaling the presence of fish below the surface.

As the camera rolled, a large shadow suddenly appeared near the side of the boat. Within seconds, the unmistakable shape of a great white shark surfaced, briefly breaking the water before slipping back beneath the waves.

The shark’s appearance was fleeting, but clear enough to leave no doubt about what the group had seen.

2. A close encounter miles offshore

The sighting occurred roughly 27 miles offshore, a distance that places the boat well beyond areas frequented by swimmers and beachgoers. According to marine experts, great white sharks are rarely seen at the surface in this part of the Gulf, making the encounter especially unusual.

The shark surfaced close enough that the crew felt it brush near the boat. Out of caution, the captain circled the vessel to ensure there was no damage or injuries before continuing on.

Just as quickly as it appeared, the shark disappeared back into deeper water.

3. Why great whites appear in the Gulf

Marine biologists say the presence of great white sharks in the Gulf of Mexico is uncommon but not alarming. As water temperatures cool in late fall and winter, some great whites migrate south along the Atlantic Coast and into the Gulf.

Dr. Bob Hueter, a longtime shark researcher and senior adviser with OCEARCH, has explained that dozens of great whites have been tagged and tracked along the Atlantic. Research suggests that more than half of them eventually enter the Gulf during seasonal migration.

Most of these sharks remain far offshore, often more than 100 miles from land, where they follow food sources and cooler waters.

4. What it means for beach safety

Despite the dramatic nature of the encounter, experts emphasize that sightings like this do not increase risk for swimmers. Great whites rarely approach shorelines in the Gulf, and encounters near boats offshore do not signal danger closer to the beach.

Marine researchers continue to monitor shark movements using satellite tags, which help scientists understand migration patterns and behavior while also informing the public.

5. Not the Clarks’ first shark encounter

For the Clarks, this was not their first close experience with a great white. Nearly two years earlier, they were involved in a research-related dive connected to a beached sperm whale off the Venice coast.

After the whale’s body was moved offshore to decompose naturally, sharks, including great whites, were drawn to the carcass. That event offered a rare opportunity for researchers to observe shark behavior in the wild.

Even with that background, the surprise appearance during a casual fishing trip stood out as a once-in-a-lifetime moment.

The couple and their friends returned to shore with a story few anglers can tell and footage capturing a rare glimpse of one of the ocean’s most powerful predators.
