British Olympic swimmer Alice Dearing is preparing for a new adventure in the Caribbean. The Nevis Tourism Authority has confirmed that Dearing will compete in the Nevis to St. Kitts Cross Channel Swim on March 28, 2026, bringing international attention to one of the region’s most unique open water endurance events.
The announcement came during a press conference at Malcolm Guishard Recreation Park, where Premier of Nevis Mark Brantley joined senior tourism officials, event organizers and media representatives to share details about the upcoming swim. The gathering highlighted the event’s growing significance as a flagship sporting attraction for the dual-island nation.

A rare Caribbean crossing
The annual 4.1-kilometre (2.5-mile) swim traverses the Narrows, the channel separating Nevis from its sister island St. Kitts. Set against turquoise waters, volcanic peaks and palm-fringed coastlines, the crossing stands as the only internationally recognized open water swim of its kind between two Caribbean islands.
Participants face more than a physical test. The swim demands endurance, discipline and mental fortitude while offering swimmers an unparalleled view of the Caribbean’s natural splendor. The event has grown steadily over two decades, attracting competitors from around the globe who consider it a bucket-list experience.

Breaking barriers in swimming
Dearing brings considerable credentials to the March event. The Tokyo 2021 Olympian made history as the first Black woman to represent Great Britain in Olympic swimming, a milestone that resonated far beyond the pool. She has claimed multiple national championship titles and earned European medals throughout her competitive career.
Since stepping back from elite competition, Dearing has channeled her energy into advocacy work. She has become a prominent voice promoting diversity, accessibility and inclusion in swimming and outdoor sports, addressing long-standing barriers that have kept many communities away from aquatic activities.
In a video message shared at the press conference, Dearing expressed enthusiasm for the unique challenge. She described her attraction to swims that feel like genuine journeys and noted the special appeal of crossing between two islands in such a beautiful setting. The warm water, scenery and sense of adventure align perfectly with what she loves about open water swimming.
Tourism meets athletics
Andia Ravariere, CEO of the Nevis Tourism Authority, emphasized the swim’s strategic importance for positioning Nevis as a credible sports tourism destination. She highlighted that few Caribbean locations can offer such a distinctive experience and noted how Dearing’s participation elevates the event’s global profile.
Premier Brantley celebrated the swim’s emergence as a must-do event for swimmers worldwide. He welcomed participants and their families to experience what he described as the languid charm of Nevis, emphasizing the pride the event generates for island residents.

Beyond the competition
The Nevis Tourism Authority encourages visitors to explore the island beyond race day. Nevis offers preserved historic sites including locations connected to Alexander Hamilton, the American founding father born on the island. The 36-square-mile destination features Georgian architecture, lush rainforest trails and uncrowded beaches.
Without cruise ports, high-rise developments or fast-food chains, Nevis maintains an unspoiled character that appeals to travelers seeking authentic Caribbean experiences. Activities range from hiking Nevis Peak to relaxing in natural hot springs and sampling local cuisine prepared with traditional methods.

Event details and registration
The Nevis Tourism Authority acknowledged Winston Crooke for establishing the foundation for cross-channel swimming on Nevis and commended Jane Hansom for elevating the event’s professionalism. Several organizations support the swim including the Ministry of Tourism, St. Kitts Tourism Authority, Tropical Delight as official hydration partner, and SwimTrek as official event package provider.
Registration for the 2026 Nevis to St. Kitts Cross Channel Swim is currently open through the event website. The March 28 date allows participants to enjoy pleasant weather conditions typical of the Caribbean during late winter and early spring months.
