The Washington Commanders franchise is mourning another loss after a difficult week. Legendary quarterback Sonny Jurgensen passed away at 91 on Friday, and the following night brought more heartbreaking news. Former Washington cornerback Barry Wilburn died in a house fire in Orange Mound, Tennessee, near Memphis. He was 62.
Details of the tragedy
Authorities reported that the Memphis Fire Department responded to a residential fire at approximately 2:00 a.m. on Friday. Firefighters found an unresponsive victim in the rear hallway, and he was pronounced dead at the scene. A family representative confirmed that Wilburn was the victim.
Wilburn’s football journey
Born in Memphis, Wilburn played college football at Ole Miss before being selected by Washington in the eighth round of the 1985 NFL Draft. Standing 6-foot-2, he played five seasons with the Redskins, appearing in 62 games and starting 28 alongside Hall of Famer Darrell Green.
During his time in Washington, Wilburn recorded 19 interceptions, including a league-leading nine in 1987. He was named first-team All-Pro that same year and played a key role in Washington’s Super Bowl XXII championship team.
After leaving Washington, Wilburn continued his career with the Cleveland Browns, Kansas City Chiefs, and Philadelphia Eagles. He also played in the Canadian Football League for the Saskatchewan Roughriders, BC Lions, and Winnipeg Blue Bombers, returning for a stint in 1999.
Memorable moments
One of the most unforgettable plays of Wilburn’s career came in 1987 when he returned an interception 100 yards for a touchdown in Washington’s 27-24 overtime win against the Minnesota Vikings to close out the regular season. His performance left a lasting mark on the team and its fans.
Remembering a champion
Wilburn’s career was celebrated for his talent, athleticism, and contributions to one of Washington’s most memorable Super Bowl victories. Fans and former teammates remember him not only for his on-field achievements but also for his dedication to the sport and his community.
Our thoughts and prayers are with Wilburn’s family during this difficult time.
