ATLANTA — Meals On Wheels Atlanta (MOWA) reached a remarkable milestone on February 25, when the Georgia State Senate officially recognized the organization for 60 years of dedicated service. Sponsored by State Senator RaShaun Kemp, the resolution highlighted the nonprofit’s ongoing mission to deliver nutrition, support, and community connection to Atlanta seniors.
Since its founding in 1965, MOWA has grown from a small local soup kitchen into a full-service organization delivering over 500,000 meals annually to nearly 1,100 seniors and homebound residents. The program addresses hunger, social isolation, and chronic health conditions, ensuring that older adults maintain independence and dignity in their own homes.
A legacy of connection and care
Meals On Wheels Atlanta does more than provide food. Each delivery serves as a wellness check, offering social interaction that improves mental and physical health outcomes. Over six decades, MOWA has distributed more than six million meals across the Atlanta area, reflecting the organization’s commitment to fostering stronger communities through service.
The Senate resolution praised MOWA’s focus on seniors with limited mobility, chronic illness, and disabilities. To sustain these programs, MOWA raises 97 percent of its funding from private donations. Innovative fundraising efforts include 1705WEST, Atlanta’s Premier Event Space with a Purpose, and Purposeful Gourmet Foods, a snack line designed to support meals programs. All proceeds from these initiatives directly benefit the organization’s meal services.
