DC weather turns wild as rain and cold move in

A soggy start to Sunday is setting the tone for a shifting weather pattern across Washington, D.C., as rain showers and a cold front move through the region. Cloudy skies and wet conditions dominated the morning, with precipitation expected to taper off by early afternoon.

As the rain clears, cooler air begins to settle in, bringing a noticeable drop in temperatures and a return to more winter-like conditions, even as spring continues.

Rainy start to Sunday morning

Residents across the region woke up to steady rain and overcast skies as showers spread throughout the area. The wet conditions are expected to ease by around midday, allowing for gradual clearing later in the afternoon.

Even as the rain moves out, damp roads and lingering clouds could continue to affect outdoor plans for much of the day.

Gusty winds add to the chill

Following the rain, strong northwest winds are expected to pick up, with sustained speeds reaching up to 15 miles per hour and gusts climbing as high as 25 miles per hour.

These breezes will make temperatures feel significantly cooler than the actual readings, especially during the afternoon and evening hours. The combination of wind and cooler air may catch some residents off guard.

Temperatures drop into early week

Sunday afternoon highs are expected to remain in the 50s and 60s, but the cooler trend continues into the night. By Sunday evening, temperatures will dip into the 40s and 50s, setting the stage for a chilly start to Monday.

Monday morning will bring temperatures in the 40s, with daytime highs struggling to climb beyond the 50s. The cooler air mass marks a temporary shift away from typical spring warmth.

Freeze watch issued for Monday night

One of the most notable developments in the forecast is the potential for freezing temperatures. A freeze watch has been issued for parts of the region as overnight lows could drop into the 30s late Monday into early Tuesday.

This sudden drop raises concerns for sensitive plants and early spring growth, prompting residents to take precautions where necessary.

Warmer weather returns later in the week

Despite the early-week chill, the forecast points to a gradual warm-up. By Tuesday, temperatures are expected to rebound into the 60s, followed by a steady climb into the 70s and even near 80 degrees by the end of the week.

Additional chances for showers remain in the forecast for midweek and next weekend, but they are not expected to significantly disrupt the warming trend.

A reminder of spring’s unpredictability

The shifting forecast highlights how quickly conditions can change during the spring season. From rainy mornings to chilly nights and a potential freeze, the week ahead offers a mix of weather patterns that require close attention.

While the return of warmer temperatures is on the horizon, the immediate focus remains on navigating the cooler, breezy conditions and preparing for the possibility of freezing overnight lows.
