Meta layoffs 8000 workers in one of its biggest cuts ever

The Meta layoffs 8000 announcement landed on May 20, 2026, and the scale of the cuts immediately drew attention across the tech industry. Mark Zuckerberg’s company notified employees across the world in emails sent at 4 a.m. local time in each region. Moreover, Singapore employees were the first to receive the notifications as the global rollout began. Furthermore, Meta HR chief Janelle Gale sent a memo earlier in the week asking North American employees to work from home on Wednesday, leaving the company’s offices largely empty on the day the cuts took effect.

The layoffs represent a 10% reduction of Meta’s total workforce. Additionally, reports earlier this week indicated that another 7,000 employees would not be cut but reassigned to AI-focused positions. Consequently, the total number of workers directly affected by this restructuring is closer to 15,000 when both groups are combined.

How employees found out and how they reacted

The days leading up to the Meta layoffs were tense and chaotic inside the company. Employees in New York gathered for a drinks event on Tuesday night, describing it as a chance to either commiserate or celebrate depending on what Wednesday brought. Moreover, some workers at Meta’s offices took free snacks and laptop chargers from the building earlier in the week in case they lost access by the end of the week.

Others hung fliers on office walls with a petition against Meta’s new program to use employee data for AI training. Furthermore, one anonymous employee told the San Francisco Standard that the office had been in chaos in the days leading up to the cuts. That employee described feeling more anxious and stressed than at any point in their career. Consequently, the mood inside Meta ahead of the layoffs reflected deep frustration and uncertainty that extended well beyond the employees who ultimately lost their jobs.

Meta did not respond to press requests for comment on the day the layoffs began.

What laid-off employees will receive

Meta announced in advance that laid-off workers would receive severance packages covering at least 16 weeks of base pay. Additionally, employees receive two extra weeks of pay for each additional year of service beyond the initial 16. Furthermore, the packages include health care continuation benefits and career support resources.

Gale’s memo described the layoffs as an effort to run the company more efficiently as it invests heavily in artificial intelligence. However, critics inside and outside the company have questioned whether cutting thousands of experienced workers while spending aggressively on AI technology reflects sound long-term strategy. Moreover, investor anxiety around the potential for an AI bubble has grown alongside the scale of Meta’s spending commitments.

Meta has announced capital expenditures of up to $145 billion for 2026 alone. That figure is more than double what the company spent in 2025. Consequently, the tension between aggressive AI investment and workforce reduction is at the center of the debate around Meta’s current direction.

The broader AI layoff wave hitting tech in 2026

The Meta layoffs 8000 cuts did not happen in isolation. The tech sector has been experiencing widespread workforce reductions linked to artificial intelligence investment throughout 2026. Moreover, Microsoft, Block, Coinbase, and Cisco have all recently announced mass layoffs or voluntary buyouts with AI cited as a leading driver.

In the first three months of 2026, the tech sector suffered more than 52,000 layoffs. Furthermore, that figure represents a 40% increase compared to the same period in 2025, according to data from Challenger, Gray and Christmas. Consequently, what is happening at Meta is part of a much larger industry shift rather than a company-specific crisis.

Zuckerberg cut more than 20,000 jobs at Meta in 2022 and 2023 during an earlier effort to reduce bureaucracy. Additionally, Meta is expected to announce further cuts later in 2026, though the exact timing and scope of those future reductions remain unclear at this stage.
