A two year old boy died Thursday inside a Highland, California home. He found an unsecured gun hidden between couch cushions and accidentally shot himself, the San Bernardino County Sheriff’s Department said. His mother and her boyfriend now face felony charges.
What happened inside the Highland home
Deputies rushed to a home in the 6900 block of Victoria Avenue shortly after 5 p.m. after reports of a child shot. Investigators say the toddler found a firearm tucked between two seat cushions on a couch. He then shot himself. Deputies started CPR right away. Medics took the boy to a local hospital, where he died from his injuries. Officials have not released his name.
The arrests and charges
The boy’s mother, 20 year old Jamaria Cobb, and her boyfriend, 52 year old Armand Bright, were both inside the home during the shooting. Deputies arrested the pair on charges of child abuse causing great bodily injury or death. Both remain at the Central Detention Center on $1.35 million bail each. They await their first court appearances.
A second child was also inside the home at the time. Child and Family Services took that child into protective custody.

The questions investigators still face
Officials have not said who legally owned the firearm. They also have not explained how it ended up within reach of a toddler. It remains unclear whether the home had any prior welfare checks or earlier contact with Child and Family Services. The investigation continues.
