A downtown Tucson entertainment district turned into a scene of chaos early Sunday morning after a mass shooting left multiple people injured and resulted in an officer-involved shooting.
According to the Tucson Police Department, the incident occurred around 2 a.m. on July 19 near East Congress Street and North 6th Avenue. Officers on foot patrol heard gunshots and immediately responded to the area.
The incident remains under investigation.
Gunfire Erupts in Downtown Tucson
Police said officers rushed toward the sound of gunfire after hearing shots in a crowded section of downtown Tucson.
As officers arrived, they encountered a male suspect running from the scene. Authorities said officers issued multiple commands to the suspect.
A uniformed officer later discharged a department-issued firearm, striking the suspect.
Emergency crews quickly secured the area and began assisting victims.
Nine Victims Suffer Gunshot Wounds
Investigators reported that nine people suffered gunshot wounds during the initial shooting.
Most of the victims sustained injuries to their arms, legs, or other extremities. First responders immediately provided medical aid before Tucson Fire Department personnel arrived.
Emergency crews transported all victims to local hospitals for treatment.
Officials said the suspect was also hospitalized and remains in critical condition.
No police officers suffered injuries during the incident.
Officer-Involved Shooting Under Investigation
The Pima Regional Critical Incident Team has taken over the criminal investigation into the officer-involved shooting.
The Pima County Sheriff’s Department is leading the investigation.
Meanwhile, the Tucson Police Department is conducting a separate internal review to determine whether officers followed department policies during the incident.
Once investigators complete their work, officials will forward their findings to the Pima County Attorney’s Office for review.

Authorities are asking anyone who witnessed the shooting or recorded video footage to come forward.
Investigators encouraged residents and visitors to contact 88-CRIME with information related to the case.
Police said anonymous tips are welcome.
