Netflix has officially announced Women Like Us. The new original comedy is already generating significant excitement. The cast alone is responsible for most of that buzz. The film stars four of the most respected actresses in Hollywood: Whoopi Goldberg, Jenifer Lewis, Vanessa Williams and Vivica A. Fox. Together, they bring decades of combined experience across film, television and music. Production begins this fall in New York City.
What Women Like Us is about
Women Like Us centers on a recently widowed woman facing a painful milestone. Her lifelong best friends and sister refuse to let her face it alone. They whisk her away to the Hamptons on what should have been her 30th wedding anniversary. A potentially devastating day quickly turns into something unexpected.
What begins as a simple getaway becomes far deeper over time. The story explores the bonds between women who have known each other across a lifetime. It also examines the complexity of grief. Furthermore, it captures the surprising ways that joy, laughter and genuine connection can surface even in the hardest moments. The premise balances comedy with emotional depth. Consequently, the casting of these four actresses feels especially deliberate.
The creative team behind the film
Tasha Smith directs Women Like Us. She has built a strong reputation for bringing authenticity and warmth to stories centered on Black women’s experiences. This project aligns naturally with that body of work.
Ali Kinney wrote the screenplay. Tracy Oliver contributed additional writing. Oliver’s credits include Girls Trip and Coming 2 America. Those projects established her as one of the most trusted voices in contemporary Black comedy. As a result, her involvement signals sharp and culturally specific humor throughout.
MACRO Film Studios and Michelle Obama’s Higher Ground are producing the film together. Higher Ground has developed a clear identity since its founding. The company consistently backs projects that center underrepresented voices. Women Like Us fits that mission precisely.

Why this film matters
The combination of Goldberg, Lewis, Williams and Fox is genuinely rare. Each has earned icon status in her own right. Each brings a distinct energy and comedic sensibility to every project she joins. Together in a single film, they create an ensemble that does not come together often enough in stories about Black women.
Moreover, the premise addresses grief, friendship and the passage of time. Those themes resonate across generations of women. The 30th wedding anniversary backdrop gives the story immediate emotional weight. The Hamptons setting, meanwhile, adds a glamorous and playful contrast. The result is a premise that works on multiple levels at once.
Women Like Us begins production this fall in New York City. Netflix has not yet announced a release date.
