Jayden Adams, the South African midfielder who played for Mamelodi Sundowns and represented his country at the 2026 FIFA World Cup, has died at the age of 25. His death came just weeks after his World Cup campaign with Bafana Bafana ended in the round of 32. The cause of death has not been confirmed.
South African police confirmed that a 25-year-old man was found dead at a residence in Schotschekloof, a suburb in central Cape Town, on Saturday morning. An investigation is now underway into the circumstances surrounding his death.
What Adams meant to South African football
Adams played all three of South Africa’s group-stage matches at the 2026 World Cup, helping Bafana Bafana reach the knockout round for the first time in the country’s World Cup history. South Africa went out in the round of 32, losing to co-hosts Canada. His contribution throughout the group stage was a significant part of that historic run.
One moment during the tournament stood out beyond the results. Adams started South Africa’s 1-1 draw against the Czech Republic having learned of his grandmother’s death just hours before kickoff. He played the full game. That choice spoke to the kind of player and person he was.
Adams made his senior international debut in 2022. He was also part of the South African squad that reached the semi-finals of the 2024 Africa Cup of Nations. He began his professional career at Stellenbosch FC before joining Mamelodi Sundowns in January 2025. At Sundowns, he won the South African league title and the CAF Champions League.

He described the loss as devastating for the country’s football community and called Adams one of the brightest young talents the sport had produced. McKenzie urged the public and media to avoid speculation while the family and Sundowns process their grief, adding that official information would come through the appropriate channels.
The South African Football Players Union also responded, calling Adams’ death an immeasurable loss. Tributes came quickly from across the football community both domestically and internationally.
What investigators are looking into
Police confirmed the investigation following the discovery of his body this morning. No further details about the circumstances have been made public. Authorities asked for patience while the process runs its course. The family and Mamelodi Sundowns have not yet issued a public statement.
Adams was 25 years old. He had just appeared at a World Cup in front of the world. He had won league titles and continental trophies. Whatever was ahead of him in his career will now remain unknown.
