A powerful winter storm sweeping across the central and eastern United States has left at least seven people dead, disrupted travel nationwide and placed nearly two-thirds of the country under weather alerts as hazardous conditions continue to unfold.

The sprawling system brought a mix of heavy snow, ice and strong winds, creating dangerous road conditions, widespread power outages and major delays at airports. Meteorologists warned that the storm’s impact could stretch for several days as freezing temperatures persist across multiple regions.

The storm’s deadly toll grows

Authorities have confirmed at least seven storm-related deaths as the system moved across several states. Fatalities were reported after vehicles slid off icy roads and as extreme cold posed life-threatening risks, particularly for vulnerable populations.

Emergency officials urged residents to avoid unnecessary travel, warning that black ice and whiteout conditions were making roads unpredictable even for experienced drivers. First responders across affected areas reported a sharp increase in weather-related emergencies as the storm intensified.

Millions placed under winter alerts

Roughly 185 million people were under winter weather alerts as the storm stretched from the central Plains to the East Coast. These alerts included winter storm warnings, ice storm warnings and wind advisories, highlighting the storm’s widespread reach.

Meteorologists said heavy snowfall combined with ice accumulation created especially dangerous conditions in parts of the Midwest and Northeast. In some areas, snow totals climbed rapidly while freezing rain coated roads, power lines and trees, increasing the risk of outages and structural damage.

Power outages leave thousands in the dark

Thousands of households were left without electricity as strong winds and ice buildup knocked down power lines. Utility crews worked around the clock to restore service, though officials cautioned that restoration efforts could be slowed by ongoing hazardous weather.

Residents were advised to conserve heat, use generators safely and check on neighbors who may need assistance. Local governments opened warming centers in several communities to help residents cope with the extreme cold.

Air travel grinds to a halt

The storm triggered the cancellation of about 12,000 scheduled flights nationwide, creating widespread travel disruptions. Major airports across the Midwest and East Coast experienced delays as snow-covered runways and deicing operations slowed departures and arrivals.

Airlines urged passengers to check flight statuses before heading to airports and offered flexible rebooking options. Transportation officials warned that delays could continue even after snowfall eases, as crews work to clear runways and reposition aircraft.

Dangerous conditions expected to linger

Forecasters warned that the storm’s effects would not end quickly. Bitter cold was expected to follow the system, raising concerns about refreezing on roads and continued strain on power infrastructure.

Meteorologists emphasized that even areas seeing lighter snowfall could face dangerous conditions due to wind chills and icy surfaces. Officials urged residents to remain cautious, limit travel when possible and stay informed as conditions evolve.

Communities brace for continued impact

Schools, government offices and businesses across multiple states announced closures as the storm disrupted daily life. Emergency management agencies coordinated response efforts, focusing on road safety, power restoration and support for displaced residents.

Weather experts stressed that storms of this scale highlight the importance of preparedness, urging families to have emergency supplies, charge devices and follow guidance from local authorities.

As the system continues its eastward push, officials said the full extent of the damage may take days to assess. For now, communities across the country remain on alert, bracing for continued winter hazards and the challenges they bring.
