Roblox Pays $12M in shocking child safety settlement

Roblox has agreed to pay $12.2 million to resolve child safety concerns raised by the state of Alabama, marking the second such settlement in recent weeks as legal pressure continues to mount against the company.

The agreement was announced on April 21 and centers on allegations that the platform did not do enough to protect young users from potential harm. The funds from the settlement will go toward supporting school resources across Alabama, adding a public-facing consequence to the company’s ongoing legal challenges.

This latest development comes shortly after Roblox reached a similar financial agreement with Nevada, signaling a broader pattern of state-level action targeting the company’s safety practices.

New safeguards focus on younger users

As part of the settlement, Roblox will implement stricter safety measures designed to better protect children on its platform. These updates center on three key changes.

The company will introduce mandatory age verification for all users. This includes facial age estimation technology and government-issued identification checks, which are intended to ensure users are placed in the appropriate safety categories.

Expanded parental controls will give guardians more authority over their children’s interactions. Parents will be able to limit who their children communicate with while using the platform.

Communication involving minors will no longer be encrypted. This adjustment is meant to allow law enforcement agencies to more easily monitor and investigate potential cases of exploitation.

These measures reflect an effort by Roblox to respond to growing criticism while attempting to rebuild trust with families and regulators.

Lawsuits continue to stack up across states

Despite the settlements, Roblox still faces legal action from at least six states. These include Texas, Florida, Louisiana, Iowa, Nebraska and Kentucky.

In addition to these state-led cases, dozens of families across the country have filed lawsuits alleging that the platform exposed children to dangerous interactions. Some claims suggest that Roblox failed to adequately prevent contact between minors and individuals with harmful intent.

One lawsuit filed in Nebraska accuses the company of building a highly profitable business while allegedly overlooking risks tied to child safety. Other cases reference incidents in which children were reportedly approached by strangers through the platform and encouraged to continue conversations elsewhere.

Platform updates aim to address criticism

Roblox has begun rolling out new features aimed at addressing these concerns. The company recently introduced age-based account tiers that limit access and communication depending on a user’s age.

Children between ages 5 and 8 are placed in a restricted category where communication is disabled by default and access is limited to content with minimal risk levels.

Users aged 9 to 15 are given moderated access, with chat features available but subject to parental oversight and content restrictions.

Users aged 16 and older are granted broader access, although certain content remains restricted to adults.

These changes are expected to take effect more broadly in the coming months and are part of Roblox’s attempt to create a safer environment for its large youth audience.

Massive user base increases pressure

Roblox remains one of the most widely used gaming platforms in the world, reporting more than 151 million daily active users as of late 2025. A significant portion of its audience is under the age of 13, making child safety a central concern for regulators and parents alike.

The platform’s popularity has also drawn attention to how children interact online and the potential risks tied to digital social spaces. The scale of its user base has amplified calls for stronger safeguards and greater accountability.

Meanwhile, other platforms in the gaming ecosystem, including Discord, have also faced scrutiny over similar concerns. Some investigations have examined how users may move conversations between platforms, raising broader questions about online safety standards.

Ongoing challenges ahead

While the Alabama settlement represents another step in addressing legal concerns, Roblox’s challenges are far from over. The combination of state lawsuits and individual claims suggests the company will remain under close watch in the months ahead.

The outcome of these cases could shape how online platforms are regulated, particularly those that attract younger audiences. For Roblox, the focus now shifts to whether its new safety measures will be enough to prevent further legal action and restore confidence among users and their families.
