Delta Resumes Direct Hong Kong Flights After 8 Years

Delta Air Lines Hong Kong direct flights are back after an eight-year absence. Flight DL88 departed Hong Kong at 9:25 a.m. on Monday, June 8, 2026, bound for Los Angeles. Moreover, this marks the first direct US service the carrier has operated from Hong Kong since 2018. Furthermore, the airline deployed an Airbus A350-900 widebody aircraft for the route, configured with 275 seats including 40 Delta One suites featuring lie-flat seats with sliding doors.

Jeff Moomaw, Delta’s vice-president for Asia-Pacific, confirmed the launch at a Monday press event. He said the airline’s full focus right now is making sure this flight succeeds before expanding to additional destinations. Consequently, passengers hoping for Delta to quickly add more Hong Kong routes should not expect announcements in the near term.

What the route looks like and what it costs

The Delta Air Lines Hong Kong direct flights operate on a daily schedule between Hong Kong and Los Angeles. Each outbound leg takes an average of 13 hours and 30 minutes. Moreover, the Airbus A350-900 offers a premium travel experience in the Delta One cabin, where lie-flat suites with sliding doors give business class travelers genuine privacy on the long-haul crossing. Furthermore, the economy cabin accounts for the bulk of the 275 seats available on each departure.

Pricing data from the Skyscanner flight search engine shows that the direct economy return service costs approximately HK$11,770, which equals roughly US$1,500. That price covers a June 12 outbound departure and a June 20 return. Moreover, the fare sits slightly above what Hong Kong flag carrier Cathay Pacific charges for the same route. Furthermore, Cathay Pacific’s economy return price including all surcharges comes in at HK$10,309. Consequently, travelers choosing Delta will pay a modest premium over the established competitor on this corridor.

Why Delta is returning to Hong Kong now

Delta’s return to Hong Kong comes despite challenging conditions in the aviation industry. Fuel costs have surged significantly in recent months, raising operating expenses across the sector. Moreover, the airline’s decision to press ahead with the launch despite those headwinds signals genuine confidence in demand for direct Hong Kong-Los Angeles capacity. Furthermore, Moomaw acknowledged that the airline intends to evaluate further route expansion based on how this flight performs over time.

The Hong Kong aviation market has been steadily recovering since the end of pandemic-era travel restrictions. Passenger volumes between Hong Kong and North America have climbed consistently in the post-pandemic period. Moreover, Hong Kong International Airport has continued attracting new and returning carriers as international travel demand rebuilds. Additionally, Delta’s return gives the city a new direct option to the US West Coast that complements existing services from Cathay Pacific and other carriers.

Moomaw’s language about being dead focused on making the flight highly successful before adding more routes reflects a disciplined expansion strategy. Moreover, that approach avoids the risk of overcommitting capacity before demand is firmly established. Furthermore, it leaves the door open for additional Delta flights from Hong Kong if the Los Angeles service performs well in its early months. Consequently, the success or failure of flight DL88 will likely determine when and whether Delta grows its Hong Kong presence further.

What the Delta One cabin offers on the Hong Kong route

The 40 Delta One suites aboard the A350-900 make this route one of the more premium long-haul options departing Hong Kong for North America. Each suite features a lie-flat seat with a sliding door, giving business class passengers a level of privacy that has become a competitive expectation on routes of this length. Moreover, the A350-900 is widely regarded as one of the most comfortable long-haul aircraft in commercial service, with modern cabin pressure and humidity systems that reduce fatigue on extended flights. Furthermore, Delta has invested heavily in its Delta One product in recent years, positioning it to compete directly with Cathay Pacific’s business class on this corridor.

For economy travelers, the route provides a new direct alternative that avoids the connecting flights and extended travel times that many passengers previously accepted on this corridor. Additionally, the direct routing at 13 hours and 30 minutes compares favorably to itineraries involving a connection through Tokyo, Seoul, or Taipei. Consequently, Delta’s return opens genuine choices for both premium and economy travelers between Hong Kong and Los Angeles.
