T.I. walks back his Verzuz comments after causing an unexpected stir
T.I. is setting the record straight. The Atlanta rapper recently appeared on The Breakfast Club while promoting his new album, Kill the King. During the interview, the hosts asked about controversial remarks he made on the Joe Budden podcast.
On that podcast, T.I. said he had no interest in participating in a Verzuz battle. He described that type of public competition as “poor people activity.” He also said that, at 45, he no longer wanted to trade shots with other artists for entertainment.
Many fans found the comments surprising. T.I. had previously expressed interest in doing a Verzuz battle. He and 50 Cent even exchanged words about a possible matchup that never happened.
Timbaland’s reaction prompted a quick clarification
The backlash came quickly. Timbaland publicly questioned T.I.’s remarks. Soon afterward, T.I. shared a video explaining what he meant. He admitted he had been drinking during the podcast and said his words failed to reflect his real intention.
T.I. clarified that he was not criticizing Verzuz itself. Instead, he said he was describing how he personally viewed competing in that setting. He associated it with ego-driven arguments played out in front of an audience. After the controversy, he contacted both Timbaland and Swizz Beatz. He told them he respected them and appreciated everything they created with Verzuz.
Why Verzuz still matters to hip-hop culture
The Breakfast Club hosts defended Verzuz during the discussion. They said the platform played an important role during the pandemic. It gave artists and fans something to enjoy when live concerts disappeared. It also created new income opportunities for performers. In addition, it revived interest in classic albums and introduced younger listeners to older hits.
Several battles became cultural moments. Jeezy versus Gucci Mane drew massive attention. Lil’ Kim versus Foxy Brown also became one of the platform’s most talked-about events.
The hosts added that they would still like to see T.I. compete on Verzuz. They argued that few artists have a catalog as deep as his.
B2K versus Pretty Ricky is up next
After discussing T.I., the conversation turned to the next Verzuz event. B2K and Pretty Ricky will face off on Thursday, June 25, during BET Awards weekend in Los Angeles.
The upcoming battle has already generated excitement. The hosts compared both groups’ catalogs and discussed the solo success of members such as Omarion and Pleasure P.
They agreed the matchup could become one of Verzuz’s most memorable events. Both groups helped define an era of R&B. Their music still carries strong nostalgic appeal, making Verzuz a fitting stage to celebrate their lasting impact.
