A Michigan bakery went all out with 60-plus flavors
Beyond the national chains, Barney’s BakeHouse Bakery in Freeland, Michigan is giving the holiday a different kind of treatment. The team started baking at 10 p.m. Thursday and worked through the night to produce more than 7,000 donuts in over 60 flavors for opening day. Specialty options include Dubai chocolate, cotton candy cloud, espresso, peanut butter chocolate and a mudslide donut stuffed with chocolate pudding and topped with crushed Oreos and gummy worms. Both the Freeland and Bay City locations are open until 4 p.m. today.
The holiday has a history worth knowing
National Donut Day started in Chicago in 1938. The Salvation Army created it to honor the volunteers who served donuts to American soldiers in France during World War I. Known as the Donut Lassies, roughly 250 volunteers set up huts near the front lines in 1917 and served as many as 9,000 donuts a day to troops overseas.
