Target baby wipes pulled after bacteria linked to sepsis
FDA testing found harmful bacteria in Up & Up wipes sold at Target stores and online
Target is recalling two varieties of its Up & Up baby wipes after FDA testing found harmful bacteria in product samples. The voluntary recall covers products sold in stores across the US and on Target’s website, and parents are being urged to stop using the affected wipes right away.
Which wipes are part of the recall
The recall covers Up & Up Fragrance Free Baby Wipes in 20-count, 72-count, 216-count, 800-count and 1,200-count packages. It also covers Up & Up Fresh Cucumber Scented Baby Wipes in 72-count, 216-count and 800-count packages. Full details including item numbers, UPC codes, manufacturing codes and expiration dates are available through the FDA recall notice.
What the FDA found in testing
The recall started after customers reported discoloration on the wipes. Following those complaints, the FDA tested product samples and found two bacteria: Burkholderia cepacia complex and Burkholderia gladioli. Both can cause illness in people and carry a higher risk for young children.
In healthy adults, contact with either bacteria on minor skin typically leads to a localized reaction. In newborns, infants and young children, whose immune systems are still developing, the bacteria can move into the bloodstream. That can result in pneumonia or sepsis, a condition that can progress to septic shock, organ failure or death.
Reports of reactions already coming in
Target and the wipes’ manufacturer, Sapro Temizlik Urunleri, have received consumer complaints tied to the products. Those reports include skin irritation, eye irritation and infections. Investigations into the severity of those reactions are ongoing.
What parents should do now
Anyone with the recalled wipes at home should stop using them immediately. The products can be returned to any Target store for a full refund without a receipt. For more help, parents can contact Target Guest Relations at 1-800-440-0680, available daily from 7 AM to 10 PM CT.
Target has not confirmed how many units are affected, but the range of package sizes included in the recall suggests wide distribution across its store network and online platform.
