A jury ruled on Tuesday that R&B singer Chris Brown and his company Black Pyramid LLC must pay nearly $13 million in damages. The case involved a housekeeper his 200-pound dog attacked while she worked at his California home. The verdict closes a legal battle that began more than five years ago. The incident took place in 2020 at Brown’s Tarzana property.
3 victims received awards in the verdict
The jury awarded damages to multiple parties connected to the attack. Maria Avila, the housekeeper who sustained the injuries, received $12.9 million for negligence. Her sister Patricia Avila witnessed the incident while working alongside Maria that day. The jury awarded Patricia $885,000 for emotional distress. Maria’s husband Oscar Olivo received an additional $50,000. Attorney Michael C. Murphy Jr., who represented Patricia, confirmed all figures.
The attack left Maria Avila with permanent injuries
The incident occurred in 2020. Maria was emptying trash outside Brown’s Tarzana home when the dog attacked her without warning. The dog, named Hades, is a Caucasian shepherd. The breed is large, powerful and historically served as guard dogs at Russian prisons. Maria claims the animal tore large chunks of skin from her body. She sustained permanent facial disfigurement, scarring, vision loss and nerve damage as a result.
Maria filed a lawsuit in 2021. A two-week trial then took place in June 2026.
Brown accepted some liability but disputed the extent of injuries
Ahead of the trial, Brown acknowledged some level of negligence. However, he disputed the full scope of Maria’s injuries. He also argued she bore partial responsibility for the incident. On June 18, he testified that he personally warned both Maria and Patricia that the dogs on the property were not friendly. He told them not to go outside unless security staff accompanied them.
Brown also told the jury that Hades was not his personal pet. His security guards purchased and cared for the dog specifically to protect the home from break-ins. He cited a history of unwanted intrusions at the property as justification.
Brown is currently on tour as the verdict landed
At the time of the verdict, Brown was on the road co-headlining his Raymond and Brown Tour alongside Usher. Representatives for Maria Avila, Oscar Olivo and Brown did not immediately respond to requests for comment following Tuesday’s ruling.
Murphy expressed relief and satisfaction after the decision. He described more than five years of litigation as finally delivering the justice Patricia and her family deserved. He called it an honor to represent her through the entire process.
