Netflix is bringing one of hip-hop’s most unusual stories to the screen. The streaming giant has announced “The Disciple: A Wu-Tang Clan Fable,” a documentary centered on the mysterious and controversial Wu-Tang Clan album Once Upon a Time in Shaolin.
The documentary will premiere on Oct. 16, 2026, and explore how a one-of-a-kind album became one of the most talked-about projects in music history.
Netflix explores Wu-Tang Clan’s rarest album
Once Upon a Time in Shaolin is unlike almost any other album. Wu-Tang Clan created just one physical copy of the 31-track project.
The documentary follows Tarik Azzougarh, better known as Cilvaringz, a longtime Wu-Tang fan who eventually became part of the group’s inner circle.
Cilvaringz approached the legendary hip-hop collective with an unusual idea. Instead of releasing an album through traditional music platforms, he wanted to create a unique musical artifact that could exist as a single physical copy.
The concept challenged the way music was being consumed in the digital and streaming era.
Why was the Wu-Tang album made as one copy?
The album was recorded secretly over six years before being placed inside an ornate silver case. Its creators wanted to challenge the idea that music should be treated as disposable digital content.
The project was eventually sold at auction in 2015 for $2 million. The sale came with an agreement that prevented the album from being commercially released until 2103.
That unusual condition helped turn Once Upon a Time in Shaolin into one of the most valuable and mysterious albums ever made.
What happened to the Wu-Tang album?
The original buyer was Martin Shkreli, the controversial entrepreneur who was later convicted of securities fraud.
The U.S. government eventually seized the album. In 2022, digital art collective PleasrDAO purchased it for $4 million.
Despite the album’s unusual ownership history, the music remained largely inaccessible to the public.
That mystery is now at the center of Netflix’s new documentary.
‘The Disciple: A Wu-Tang Clan Fable’ director
Joanna Natasegara directed the documentary, which premiered at the 2026 Sundance Film Festival.
Natasegara previously won an Academy Award as a producer of the documentary short The White Helmets. She spent five years working on the new Wu-Tang project.
The filmmaker described the experience as a long-term project focused on themes including community, creativity, determination and innovation.
When does Netflix’s Wu-Tang documentary premiere?
“The Disciple: A Wu-Tang Clan Fable” premieres Oct. 16, 2026, on Netflix.
The film offers viewers a closer look at the people, ideas and controversy behind Once Upon a Time in Shaolin. It also examines the debate over whether music can retain its value as rare art in an era dominated by streaming.
For Wu-Tang Clan fans, the documentary could provide one of the most detailed looks yet at the story behind the group’s one-of-a-kind album.
