YNW Melly’s case is still moving forward as his January 2027 retrial gets closer. A judge is currently reviewing several legal issues tied to what evidence the court will allow at the new trial.
An October 27 hearing will likely address some of those questions. The court previously ordered prosecutors and the defense to clarify which evidence an earlier ruling affects.
A case with a long legal history
Melly, whose real name is Jamell Demons, first faced arrest in 2019. Authorities connected him to the October 2018 shooting deaths of fellow rappers Christopher “YNW Juvy” Thomas Jr. and Anthony “YNW Sakchaser” Williams.
His first trial in 2023 ended in a mistrial after jurors could not reach a unanimous verdict. Prosecutors allege Melly staged the killings to look like a drive-by shooting. He has pleaded not guilty to the murder charges and remains in custody while he awaits his new trial.
Bond request denied again
A judge denied Melly’s latest request for bond in May. The ruling followed an evidentiary hearing, where the court reviewed testimony, prior trial evidence and the broader case record.
The judge found the state’s evidence still met the legal bar for denying bond in capital cases. Florida’s standard requires prosecutors to show clear proof of guilt and a strong presumption of guilt.
Evidence disputes have delayed the retrial
Disagreements over which digital evidence prosecutors can present at trial have repeatedly pushed back the case’s timeline. Much of the dispute centers on material investigators pulled from Melly’s cellphone, email accounts and social media.
An earlier ruling limited most of that digital evidence to messages from the day of the killings and shortly after. Prosecutors appealed that decision. Their appeal led to the extended review process still playing out in court.
What comes next
The January 2027 retrial will once again focus on the 2018 deaths of Thomas and Williams. Melly’s co-defendant, Cortlen Henry, also faces charges connected to the killings.
The October 27 hearing should bring more clarity on which evidence both sides can use once the trial begins. Until then, Melly remains in custody as the legal proceedings continue to unfold.
