The Chicago P.D. Season 13 finale delivered one of the darkest moments in the show’s history. Hank Voight crossed a brutal line during the episode titled Born or Made, leaving fans stunned by the closing moments.
The finale centered on the long-running search for Shari, the missing sister of Eva Imani. After years of searching, Voight and the Intelligence Unit finally tracked her down. However, the emotional reunion quickly turned violent when they confronted Russ Kirby, the man responsible for keeping Shari captive for decades.
Voight’s violent final confrontation
The episode reached its climax after Imani was lured into a dangerous trap. At the same time, Shari struggled with severe trauma and Stockholm syndrome, making the rescue even more heartbreaking.
As the Intelligence Unit rushed to save Imani, Voight confronted Kirby directly. After noticing Kirby was armed and preparing to fire, Voight disarmed him. However, instead of stopping there, he repeatedly slammed a door into Kirby’s head in a brutal attack.
Eventually, Burgess had to physically pull a blood-covered Voight away.
As a result, the finale ended not with celebration, but with silence and shock. The final stare between Voight and Imani carried the emotional weight of everything that had happened.
Why the ending matters
The finale was not only about Kirby’s death. Instead, it focused heavily on Voight’s relationship with violence.
Showrunner Gwen Sigan explained that the writers spent much of the season exploring where Voight’s violent instincts come from. Initially, they considered linking it to an abusive father. However, the story later revealed that Voight’s father had actually been one of the few stabilizing forces in his life.
Consequently, the season leaned into the idea that violence has always existed inside Voight.
At the same time, the finale suggested that similar darkness may also exist within Imani. Throughout the season, both characters bonded through persistence, pain, and their refusal to quit searching for Shari.
The emotional cost of saving Shari
Although Shari was rescued alive, the ending remained deeply tragic. She still could not remember her sister or reconnect with her family after years of captivity.
Therefore, Imani’s long-awaited reunion became emotionally devastating instead of triumphant.
Meanwhile, Voight’s actions may create lasting consequences for the Intelligence Unit moving forward. His decision to kill Kirby after disarming him crossed a legal and moral boundary that could reshape future storylines.
In addition, the final scene left viewers questioning whether Imani now sees Voight as a hero, a monster, or both.
What comes next for Chicago P.D.?
The Season 13 finale sets up major uncertainty heading into the next season. Voight once again chose justice on his own terms. However, the emotional and professional fallout may finally catch up with him.
For longtime fans, the ending reinforced what has always made Chicago P.D. compelling: the constant tension between justice and brutality inside Voight himself.
This time, though, the cost felt heavier than ever.
