Stock market shutdown schedule for Memorial Day 2026

Memorial Day has officially arrived, marking a national day of remembrance for military members who died while serving the United States. The federal holiday also signals the unofficial beginning of summer for many Americans, with families gathering for cookouts, travel plans and long weekend celebrations.

For investors and traders, however, the holiday also means a temporary pause in Wall Street activity.

Both major U.S. stock exchanges, the New York Stock Exchange and the Nasdaq Stock Market, are closed in observance of Memorial Day on Monday, May 25, 2026. Trading will resume on Tuesday during regular operating hours.

The closure follows the federal holiday calendar recognized across much of the financial sector, including many banks and government offices.

Investors will not be able to buy or sell stocks through regular market trading during the closure. Market data and after-hours activity may still appear in limited forms through certain broker platforms, but official trading remains paused.

Regular trading hours return Tuesday

Once the holiday ends, the stock market will reopen with its standard schedule.

Core trading hours for the NYSE are from 9:30 a.m. to 4 p.m. ET each weekday. Nasdaq follows the same timetable and holiday schedule throughout the year.

The Memorial Day closure is one of several scheduled pauses in trading activity for 2026.

Juneteenth is the next stock market holiday

After Memorial Day, the next major market closure will happen on Juneteenth.

Both exchanges are expected to close on Friday, June 19, in observance of the federal holiday commemorating the end of slavery in the United States.

Juneteenth has become an increasingly recognized date on the financial calendar since becoming a federal holiday in 2021.

Independence Day observance changes the July schedule

Because Independence Day falls on a Saturday in 2026, the market holiday will be observed on Friday, July 3.

That means both the NYSE and Nasdaq will remain closed that day.

Holiday adjustments like this are common when federal holidays land on weekends, allowing workers and institutions to observe them on the nearest weekday.

Thanksgiving includes an early market close

Investors will also see a modified schedule around Thanksgiving later in the year.

While markets will fully close on Thanksgiving Day, trading will resume for a shortened session the following day. On Nov. 27, both exchanges are scheduled to close early at 1 p.m. ET.

Shortened trading days are common around major holidays and often lead to lighter market activity.

The final scheduled market closure of 2026 will arrive during Christmas week.

The stock market will close entirely on Friday, Dec. 25, for Christmas Day. Exchanges will also operate on a shortened schedule the day before, closing at 1 p.m. ET on Dec. 24.

For many traders and financial institutions, the holiday period marks one of the quietest stretches of the year.

Although Memorial Day brings a temporary halt to stock market activity, investors can expect regular operations to resume quickly once the holiday concludes. For many Americans, the day remains focused on honoring fallen service members while also enjoying time away from work and daily routines.
