Malcolm D. Lee built his name on comedies. With Strung, he went somewhere much darker. The thriller began streaming today, June 26, on Peacock. Alan McElroy wrote the script, and Lee said he could not stop reading once he started.
Strung follows a gifted violinist who lands a tutoring job with the daughter of a wealthy family. At first, the opportunity seems like a dream. Soon, though, hidden secrets begin to push her toward the edge. She starts to question her safety, her goals and her own mind.
Lee made his name with Girls Trip and The Best Man. Taking on a thriller with mature themes puts him in new territory. He has long admired Fatal Attraction. Strung gave him the chance to work in that same space.
The cast Lee put together for ‘Strung’
Chloe Bailey plays the violinist at the center of the story. Fans know Bailey from grown-ish and Swarm. Joining her is Emmy winner Lynn Whitfield, who brings depth and weight to the wealthy family’s world. Whitfield won her Emmy for The Josephine Baker Story and appeared in Madea’s Family Reunion. Lucien Laviscount, known from Emily in Paris and Snatch, also stars.
The film’s most talked-about casting story involves Romy Woods. Strung marks her first film role. Lee and the Blumhouse team searched widely before they found her. After a chemistry read with Bailey, the choice became clear. Bailey’s response to that session told Lee everything he needed to know. Woods got the part.

Lee on the Knicks win and what it meant
Lee’s cousin is Oscar-winning filmmaker Spike Lee, one of the most well-known Knicks fans in the country. The Knicks won their first NBA championship in 53 years. Spike Lee was at the center of that celebration. Malcolm Lee shared that excitement. He said Knicks fans feel things deeply, and the city’s response to winning matched that energy exactly.
Where Girls Trip 2 stands today
Girls Trip 2 brings back the Flossy Posse. That means Queen Latifah, Tiffany Haddish, Regina Hall and Jada Pinkett Smith all returning. Lee said the script is in a solid place, though the team still needs to shape it further. The original Girls Trip set a high bar. Lee wants the follow-up to meet that standard before it goes into production. So far, he has not confirmed a release date. However, his tone suggests the project is moving forward with real intent.
Strung is now streaming on Peacock.
